Movie Review (FilmQuest Film Festival): The Black String (2019)
Life goes from boring and lonely to maddening and terrifying for twentysomething Jonathan, the protagonist of director Brian Hanson’s The Black String, a terrific supernatural/body horror film with paranoia thriller and film noir elements. Jonathan, superbly portrayed by Frankie Muniz of Agent Cody Banks (2003) and the TV series Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006), is a loner who lets life pass him by while working at what he calls a “lifestyle convenience boutique,” but what most of us refer to as a liquor store. His outgoing boss and friend Eric (Blake Webb of the American Horror Story [2011] TV series and Alienate [2016]) coaxes him into living life a bit more, which leads Jonathan to call a singles hotline number after seeing its seemingly personalized commercial on television. As a result, Jonathan winds up on a date with the fetching Dena (Chelsea Edmunson of 14 Cameras and Howlers, both 2018) and contracting a horrid looking rash from having unprotected sex

Movie Review: Scooter (2019)
Scooter presents the tale (via a combo of mockumentary and found footage) of three internet celebs who get the wild hair to make a long distance trek via scooters for their lil’ web pro-grim. Along the way tensions begin to flare, and things only get worse when our heroes record a murder as it happens in the ass-end of nowhere! Of course escape becomes impossible, and soon the three amigos find themselves at the not-so-tender mercy of that murderous maniac… but what will their ultimate fate be? Scooter starts out promising; the cast is likable… and more importantly believable, as is the basic premise of the fright flick. There is a nice sense of world building, and things truck along at a reasonable pace while setting up a nice bit of tension; we know shit is going to go south, but when and how remains a mystery for a good chunk of the run-time (yeah, this is a slow burn

Blu-ray Review: Guns (1990) and Do or Die (1991)
I have a lil’ something different for you cats n’ creeps today; a look at two Blu-rays put out by Mill Creek Entertainment featuring some pure exploitation gold! Guns (1990): Juan Degas, the infamous Jack of Diamonds (C.H.I.P.S.’ Erik Estrada in a rare villainous role) is back in action, and he has a plan to run guns down Molokai way. Thankfully L.E.T.H.A.L. Agents Donna (Dona Speir, reprising her role from other flicks in the Malibu Bay series) and Nicole (Roberta Vasquez), are on the case and ready to get naked and fire missiles at shit nearly non-stop, so good luck to ya Juan. I know the two burning questions plaguing your fevered brain: Is there a federal agent in this that’s also a magician/assassin (played by legendary television performer Chuck McCann who steals the entire picture in my opinion), and does Danny Trejo (Machete) play a Chinese dude? The answer is “yes” to both, naturally. Also in the plus column

Netflix Review: Marianne
You know the drill, sign on to Netflix and spend hours looking for a good horror movie to watch. But here’s a surprise, the scariest thing on Netflix isn’t a horror movie. It’s a French (English dubbed) series titled “Marianne,” and it was released on Friday the 13th. I know what you’re thinking, ‘How scary can a show called ‘Marianne’ be?’ As a hardcore horror fan who’s next to impossible to scare, I can honestly say “Marianne” is downright chilling. But that’s not all; at its heart, the series is about a messed-up woman returning to the place and family that she pushed away years ago. It’s about people growing, becoming a better version of themselves, and conquering their demons. In the series, a well-known horror author Emma (Victoria Du Bois), returns to her hometown after a childhood friend reaches out to her for help. She believes that her mother is possessed by the witch from Emma’s novels, inspired by
