Movie Review: Rent-A-Pal

A lonely bachelor resigned to being the full-time caretaker for his ailing mother becomes increasingly obsessed by a videotape in writer/director Jon Stevenson’s Rent-A-Pal, an unsettling character study that builds into a full-on thriller in its third act. Wonderfully acted and gripping throughout, Stevenson’s directorial debut is a chilling watch. Set in 1990, Rent-A-Pal stars Brian Landis Folkins as David, a 40-year-old man who lives with his elderly, verbally abusive mother Lucille (Kathleen Brady), who suffers from dementia. With no real outside contact, he seeks a romantic relationship through a video dating service that has questionable practices. One day at the service’s offices, he impulse purchases a videotape called “Rent-A-Pal,” and begins to connect with the character named Andy (Wil Wheaton in a creepy performance), who asks for personal information, suggests drinks and card games, and slowly becomes a heavily influential part of David’s lonely life. Enter Lisa (Amy Rutledge), a fellow caregiver who matches through the dating service with

Writer-Director Rob Savage Inks Three Picture Deal With Blumhouse

Hot off the heels of his acclaimed film, Host, Blumhouse has entered into a three-picture deal with sought-after British director Rob Savage. Blumhouse will finance and partner with Savage to produce the three films in which Savage will be collaborating with the same team behind Host, including producer Douglas Cox, writers Jed Shepherd & Gemma Hurley, and editor Breanna Rangott. We’ve been tracking Rob’s work for some time now, and when I got a look at Host, I saw the inventiveness in his work that Ryan Turek on the Blumhouse team had been championing,” said Blumhouse founder Jason Blum. “We are looking forward to getting this partnership underway immediately.” I’m thrilled to be partnering with Blumhouse on these movies. Their status in the horror genre is unmatched, but I equally admire their filmmaker-led approach. They embody the independent filmmaking spirit with which we made Host and I can’t wait to create some new nightmares with them.” Savage stated. Released July

Watch The Haunting Trailer For ‘The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw’

Writer-director Thomas Robert Lee takes viewers on a dark journey filled with religious paranoia, horror, and revenge in The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw whose new haunting trailer has arrived, teasing an intense, dark tale set against the autumnal palette of the harvest season in 1973. The film explores the disturbing bond between Audrey, an enigmatic young woman, and Agatha, her domineering ‘mother’, who live secretly as occultists on the outskirts of a remote Protestant village. As the community is besieged by a pestilence of unknown origin: children, fields, and livestock begin to die — yet the Earnshaw farm remains strangely unaffected. As mass hysteria sets in the village, the townsfolk commence accusations against Audrey and Agatha of witchcraft. Catherine Walker, Jared Abrahamson, Hannah Emily Anderson, Geraldine O’Rawe, Don McKellar, and Sean McGinley star in The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw, featuring Jessica Reynolds as Audrey Earnshaw. I wanted to tell a story about legacy, and to specifically explore it within the

The ‘Splatter Club’ Is A Club You Definitely Want to Be Part Of: Book Review

A few days ago, I was introduced to the Splatter Club. I thoroughly enjoyed reading K. Trap Jones’ short story collection Welcome to the Splatter Club. This book is a collection of fantastic short stories written by authors who write without holding back and without censoring the stories they want to tell. When reading this book, I got an “Are You Afraid of the Dark” feel. No, the stories are not for children…definitely not for children. They are not simplistic or predictable or anything like that. What I mean is that it has the feel of a bunch of friends sitting around a camp fire telling their horror stories to each other and trying to out-scare one another. I love it! It is fun, weird, violent, sex-filled and extreme. Honestly, it’s just a great, fun escape into splattering horror. These stories are not for everyone. They are extremely violent and dark. They are sex and drug-filled. They are uncomfortable and

Movie Review: ‘The Babysitter: Killer Queen’ Is A Frighteningly Funny Flick

There are few genres I love as much as horror, but horror-comedies are right up there on the list. When you can find one of those rare films that can both scare you and make you laugh, you’re in for a treat! Two years ago we were left overjoyed with Netflix The Babysitter, so when Netflix announced the sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, I was beyond excited. Now, that bad boy is about, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint! Judah Lewis returns as the quick-witted Cole, this time around he doesn’t just have a cult to deal with, everyone thinks he made up the events from the first movie. If that’s not enough, there’s also the regular high school drama. The poor kid can’t catch a break. Lewis has acting talent beyond his years and pulls off the character to the “T”. The combo of goofy, sweet, and slightly badass is perfect for this character. He’s relatable
