Movie Reviews: Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival

Special guest coauthor: Chris Weatherspoon The 23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), the largest genre film fest in both its home of South Korea and of Asia as well, took place about a month earlier than its preceding editions (running June 27–July 7 this year) and delivered one of its strongest lineups in recent memory. BIFAN boasted horror, thriller, action, and other genre films of all stripes from around the world. Following are our thoughts on five of the fest’s offerings. Chris Weatherspoon: Irish horror-comedy Extra Ordinary is the feature debut for writing/directing team Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman. Comedian Maeve Higgins (Inside Amy Schumer) stars as Rose Dooley, a bumbling spinster who earns her living as a driving instructor; however, Rose is far from being an ordinary, lonely middle-aged woman, as the movie’s title notes. Rose has the ability to communicate with the dead and to exorcise ghosts, but a childhood incident has left her traumatized, and for

Movie Review: Candy Corn (2019)

A group of bullying jackanapes decide to spend All Hallows Eve buggin’ the shit out of townie odd-ball Jacob (Nate Chaney)… who just so happens to have found a temp gig as a carney at Dr. Death’s Side Show Spook House Spectacular. Soon the torment goes to far, Jacob takes a dirt nap, and is resurrected (due in no small part to his freaky new friends) with his mind set on lappin’ up some sweet, sweet revenge against those what done him wrong. Writer/Director Josh Hasty (creator of the mega-cool pic Honeyspider, which yours cruelly slapped a revoltin’ review on ages ago right here) seems to have only one goal in mind with Candy Corn, and that is distilling the essence of the haunted Halloween holiday and committing it to sinful celluloid for all to see! I’m pleased as poisoned punch to let you cats n’ creeps know; he succeeded like a mother fucker! Everything from the color palette, to

Special Effects Icon Todd Masters Talks Child’s Play And More In An Interview

I had the honor of sitting down with special effects master and Primetime Emmy Award winner Todd Masters who has been in the special effects industry for forty years and has worked on a horde of projects including Tales from the Crypt, Slither, Skyscraper starring Dwayne Johnson, and most recently Lars Kleveberg‘s new Child’s Play movie. Todd walked me through how Chucky was brought to life and so much more. In the film, Aubrey Plaza plays the role of a mother who gives her son (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature. Beatrice Kitsos (“The Exorcist”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Atlanta”), Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke (Shameless) also star in the film written by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury). Mark Hamill voices the killer doll. Horror Fuel: “I have to confess, dolls freak me out. I was exposed to Chucky a little too young.” Todd Masters: “Oh, really? Where are you on the whole Chucky

Movie Review: Starfish (2018)

Aubrey (Virginia Gardner) is having one of those days; she wakes up the day after her friend Grace’s (Christina Masterson) funeral to find her small mountain town in the throws of a monster filled apocalyptic event (happens more than you think boils n’ ghouls…). Anyway, how her friend is connected to these events, and how they can be stopped, are up to Aubrey to discover as she goes on a scavenger hunt for a series of mix tapes Grace has left behind in various locations. Yup, some cassette tapes may cancel the apocalypse… Does that synopsis above sound weird, and perhaps a bit vague? Well, you can bet your ass the film it describes sure as hell is! Starfish is a post-modern, thinking person’s fright flick…but don’t let that turn ya off; this thing is packed with a sinister vibe, mysterious recordings, creepy monsters, and anime…and I don’t mean a character just digs on cartoons; there’s a full on, breathtaking

(Watch) Four Terrifying ‘Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark’ Creatures Revealed

Last night during the Super Bowl we were introduced to four of the nightmare-inducing monsters in Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark from director André Øvredal. We’ve got all four videos here to share with you, but here’s a piece of advice, don’t watch them in dark, alone. While it is based on the hit children’s books series by Alvin Schwartz, and the film is about kids, it will leave adults sleeping with the lights on. The film centers on a group of teens who must solve the mystery surrounding the sudden and macabre deaths in their small town. Written by Guillermo del Toro, Dan Hageman, and Kevin Hageman, the film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn. Guillermo del Toro produces alongside Sean Daniel, Jason F. Brown, J. Miles Dale, and Elizabeth Grave Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark opens in theaters everywhere on

Filmmaker Conrad Faraj Fills Us In On His New Sci-Fi Horror Film ‘Fighting The Sky’

Conrad Faraj‘s (The Shadow People, The Candyman Conspiracy) latest film Fighting the Sky is rapidly approaching its February release date. Ahead of the film’s arrival, I sat down with Conrad to ask a few questions about the alien invasion film and the many movies he has coming out soon. Horror Fuel: “How did you get into the film industry?” Conrad Faraj: “I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker since I was very, very young. I remember writing a lot of fan fiction. As I started writing more and more, I decided to make them into movies. I turned short stories into short movies. Ever since then, I’ve been making bigger and bigger movies. Here I am now.” Horror Fuel: “How would describe your latest film, Fighting the Sky?” Conrad Faraj: “Fighting the Sky is a science fiction adventure film with horror elements. It is a film that I’ve been dreaming of doing for a very long time. It’s a film

Blu-ray Review: The Critters Collection (1986 – 1992)

Man oh man I love me some Critters…well the first film anyway. To be truthful, I loved the sequel as well, but only ended up seeing it once or twice, and the third and fourth pics? Well, I know I saw them at some point, but I remember fuck-all about them…but that first film; my lord I must have watched that fifty times in the late eighties alone! So, since it’s obviously waaaay past time for a re-visit to the frightful franchise, and since those delicious devils at Scream Factory have just put out a new Blu-ray collection featuring all for films, we begin my latest revoltin’ review for these hallowed haunted halls! To the surprise of no one we begin with: Critters (1986): A group of intergalactic convicts, who resemble the offspring of Fizzgig mating with a porcupine (and we both know that lil’ bastard totally would too), escape a prison asteroid and land near the farm of young
