FilmQuest, a film festival that celebrates the majesty of genre filmmaking in the realms of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and beyond, backs up its stellar reputation with an amazing lineup of official 2020 selections. I can highly recommend the incredible horror anthology The Mortuary Collection, the rowdy, punk rock-driven horror comedy Uncle Peckerhead, and the humorous reimagining of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, and I cannot wait to see the other features on tap. Dozens of mouth-watering short films are also scheduled. One of MovieMaker Magazine’s 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2017 and 2015, a MovieMaker Magazine Top 30 Bloody Best Genre Fest in the World in 2018, a FilmFreeway Top 100 Best Reviewed Film Festival, and Utah’s three-time Best of State Film Festival (2018, 2019, 2020), the seventh annual FilmQuest will take place on dates to be determined at the Velour Live Music Gallery in Provo, Utah. Blu-ray Review: The Complete Lenzi/Baker Giallo Collection (1969 – 1972)

As you may infer from the name of this collection, Italian horror maestro Umberto Lenzi and Pennsylvania-born actress Caroll Baker worked on a film or four together… and my fabulous freaky fiends at Severin have boxed ’em up with plenty of extras and sent them out the diabolical door! Let’s kick off our look at The Complete Lenzi/Baker Giallo Collection with 1969’s Orgasmo! High-maintenance and horny widow, Kathryn West(Baker), heads down Italy-way to shack up in her rich late old geezer’s posh-ass Villa. And there she stays, painting, lounging, being annoyed by her perpetually bitchy maid Theresa (a fantastic Lilla Brignone) and generally being bored off her tits. All that changes when equally horny, sports car enthusiast Peter Donovan (Lou Castel) breaks down right in front of our heroine’s front gate; an event that leads to some soggy sexcapades in a steamin’ hot shower (the water of which, must be noted, is drank by Donovan before he starts a-drillin’… “just

Artist Spotlight: Giuseppe Balestra

A little while back I did a review of the new fantastic Ghostbusters Art Book, a collection of amazing artists paying tribute to the iconic movie. In my review, I listed some of my favorite pieces, the poster by the incredibly talented artist Giuseppe Balestra. I feel that Giuseppe’s artwork deserves a more in-depth look. Born in Rome and raised in South Italy, the artist prefers using pen and inks, cross-hatching and stippling, before eventually combining digital color, drawing inspiration from literature, movies, especially horror and fantasy. I like to create illustrations in which the darkness of the shadows stands in contrast to the light. They’ve been called “melancholic, mysterious and poetic. I’ve always loved doing art since I was a child, always experimenting with all kinds of media. I published my first work in late 2015 in The Lovecraft eZine vol.36 and since then I’ve been doing it professionally, working on internal illustrations and covers for books, posters, and

Rodney Alcala: The Dating Game Killer

Before the days of YouTube, Netflix and other at-your-fingertips entertainment, staying home sick from school consisted of watching daytime TV. My personal favorite when I was resting on the couch was watching game shows (I loved The Price is Right). I often wondered how people were chosen for participate on the shows, what they did after their 15-minutes of fame, and who they were off the show. For the audience watching The Dating Game in 1978, they didn’t know that they were watching a serial rapist/murderer/child molester with over 100 possible victims. Rodney James Alcala was born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala Buquor on August 23, 1943. This man had some of the best luck I have ever read about and the disgusting failures of law enforcement and the judicial system led to so many more victims suffering at the hands of this monster. Alcala’s family life, like many killers, was not ideal. His father, Raoul, left when Alcala was about 11

Movie Review: ‘Relic’ Tackles The Horrors Of Dementia In Unique, Terrifying Way

Normally, when I review a movie I try not to give away too many spoilers. This time, I feel like it’s necessary to do the movie justice. Consider this a warning. Directed by Natalie Erika James who co-wrote the film with Christian White, Relic‘s official synopsis reads as: “A daughter, mother, and grandmother are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family home.” The synopsis does not do the film justice. Yes, Relic is a horror movie, but it is also so much more. It is a commentary about the horrors of dementia and the terrifying process of a loved one losing themselves and becoming a husk of who they once were, as well as the toll the disease takes on the entire family. Imagine slowly losing who you are, losing your memories and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. That’s scarier than anything any film could really capture, but somehow Relic comes close. The entire

CW’s New “Killer Camp” Reality Series Pays Homage To 1980’s Slashers

Following its debut in the UK last year, the slasher reality series “Killer Camp” is heading to the CW in the US, paying homage to the 80s slasher films we love so much. In the series, “11 British strangers are shocked to discover they are not going on a fun new reality show called “Summer Camp’” but actually participating in a horror whodunnit called “Killer Camp.” Each night someone will be ‘murdered’ – and they must determine who the secret murderer is amongst them.” “The object of the game is to earn cash while avoiding being killed and therefore eliminated from the game. The murderer will bump off their fellow campers in ever more extreme, hilarious and inventive ways; it’s the job of the innocents to work out who is responsible before it’s too late… The killer will eliminate an innocent every night, assisted by the evil camp handyman “Bruce,” who actually executes the bloody hilarious death scenes. Comedian Bobby

Blu-ray Review: Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Shinya Tsukamoto

Shinya Tsukamoto is one of cinema’s most daring auteurs, willing to tackle any number of dark subjects through a multitude of genres, and Arrow Video’s new box set; Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Shinya Tsukamoto will surely show you that in spades! Starting things off, Disc 1 (of 4 total) contains Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992), and The Adventure of Denchu-Kozo (1987). Tetsuo: The Iron Man features Tomorô Taguchi as a businessman that has the misfortune of committing vehicular homicide on the metal fetishist (Tsukamoto, who as you will see acts in nearly all of his films), a strange vagrant that is slowly becoming more machine than man… a condition he can spread like a disease as our hero soon comes to realize, as not only is he becoming a cyborg (complete with a whirling drill for a cock) but those around him are too… and they are out for his blood… or oil…
