Blu-ray Review: Universal Horror Collection: Volume 4 (1937 – 1946)

The last three Universal Horror Collections brought to us courtesy of those devious n’ delightful devils over at Scream Factory have been a creepy cornucopia of fright flick fun (Don’t believe me? Head here and here and here to read my thoughts for your own sinister self!)! Let’s see if Volume 4 lives up to it’s predecessors! Starting things off we have 1937’s Night Key: David Mallory (Boris Karloff) is the old-as-balls inventor of a real peach of a new burglar alarm… in fact it’s so great that a real asshole of a businessman ends up taking our nearly blind hero for a ride and steals the profits from the device. Well Dave isn’t going to sit still for that prime cut of being poor bullshit, and before long and he falls in with some gangsters who want to utilize our protagonist’s smarts to help them come into some easy (read: fuckin’ stolen) money! A rather lightweight caper with a

The First Images From ‘The Power’ Prey Upon Our Fears Of The Darkness

Today, we have the first look at director Corinna Faith‘s supernatural thriller The Power that preys upon our instinctual fear of the dark. Set in London in 1974 during a long, hard winter, “as striking miners switch off the power across Britain, rolling electrical blackouts plunge the country into darkness. Val (Rose Williams), a young nurse on her first day of duty, is forced to work the night shift in a crumbling hospital. “When most of the patients and staff are evacuated to another hospital across town, Val finds herself in a near-empty building, enveloped by a sinister darkness. Within these walls lies a deadly secret and a terrifying presence. Now Val must face her own traumatic past and deepest fears to confront the malevolent force intent on destroying them all.” Charlie Carrick, Paul Antony-Barber, Robert Goodman, and Marley Chesham also star. The Power is currently in post-production. Altitude Entertainment is handling worldwide sales.

Movie Review: Before the Night is Over (2020)

Poor Samantha (Samantha Acampora); her parents are recently deadsville, and she’s been whisked away (by means of one creepy chauffeur) to her aunt’s opulent bordello… a deviant domicile where every dark sexual desire is satisfied among the all-male clientele… for a price. As fate would have it, folks start pulling the ol’ vanishing act left and right, and Sam gets on the case with the quickness… and before long the deep, dark secrets that are harbored within the wicked walls of that house of ill repute come tumblin’ into the light! Independent horror maestro Richard Griffin (aided and abetted by frequent co-writer Lenny Schwartz) really cranks up the Euro-horror vibe in his newest release, and man-oh-fuckin’-man is Before the Night is Over a fright flick that lovers of Franco (Jess that is) will doubtless eat up with revoltin’ relish! We get a freaky flurry of rich crimsons, jade greens, and chiaroscuro shadows (not to mention plenty of shots you’d swear

Witness The Shepherd Speak In The New Clip From ‘The Other Lamb’

Ahead of its April release, we have a new clip from the disturbing, yet mesmerizing cult thriller The Other Lamb, which received a 5 skull review from Horror Fuel. The Malgorzata Szumowska film, written by Catherine S. McMullen, stars Raffey Cassidy (Vox Lux, The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Michiel Huisman (The Invitation, Game of Thrones), and Denise Gough (Colette). “For her entire life, the cult she was born into has been all that teenage Selah (Raffey Cassidy) has known. Along with a band of similarly cloistered young women she lives seemingly unstuck in time, cut off from modern society in a remote forest commune presided over by a man called Shepherd (Michiel Huisman), a controlling, messiah-like figure with a frightening dark side. But when her insular world is rocked by a series of nightmarish visions and disturbing revelations, Selah begins to question everything about her existence—including her allegiance to the increasingly dangerous Shepherd. Awash in images of primal, dreamlike

Movie Reviews (Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow): A Ghost Waits; Anderson Falls

A Ghost Waits Horror cinema has had a strong track record in the past couple of years of introducing stunning debuts from first-time feature filmmakers. Add writer/director Adam Stovall to that list with his winning entry A Ghost Waits, a black-and-white offering that delivers chilling moments (the third act contains a scene that may go down as one of the most controversial of this year), plenty of offbeat humor, and a truly charming romance angle. Jack (MacLeod Andrews) is a handyman who fixes up vacated houses and readies them for new tenants. His boss gives him the task of finding out why one certain property has such a frequent and sudden turnaround, with people leaving abruptly. Viewers learn long before Jack does that that the cause is a ghost — that of a young woman named Muriel (Natalie Walker). She is actually a “spectral agent” whose job it is to scare humans off the property, and she works for the

‘Swallow’ Now Out On Digital And Demand

From writer-director Carlo Mirabella-Davis (interview) comes the brilliant thriller Swallow, now out on Digital and Demand. On the surface, Hunter (Haley Bennett) appears to have it all. A newly pregnant housewife, she seems content to spend her time tending to an immaculate home and doting on her Ken-doll husband, Richie (Austin Stowell). However, as the pressure to meet her controlling in-laws and husband’s rigid expectations mounts, cracks begin to appear in her carefully created facade. Hunter develops a dangerous habit, and a dark secret from her past seeps out in the form of a disorder called pica – a condition that has her compulsively swallowing inedible, and oftentimes life-threatening, objects. A provocative and squirm-inducing psychological thriller, Swallow follows one woman’s unraveling as she struggles to reclaim independence in the face of an oppressive system by whatever means possible. Austin Stowell, Elizabeth Marvel, David Rasche, and Denis O’Hare also star in Swallow that won Haley Bennett the Tribeca Film Festival award

Blu-ray Review: The Passion of Darkly Noon (1995)

A down-home gal who goes by Callie (Ashley Judd) takes in a confused, injured young dude with the unlikely name of Darkly Noon (Brendan Fraser). Well, seems our boy Darkly used to be a member of one of those batshit religious cults that the feds went Waco on. Anyway, Callie’s mute boyfriend Clay (Viggo Mortensen) comes into the scene and things begin to sour… and that trend only continues as Darkly meets Clay’s mama Roxy (Grace Zabriskie) who tells him his new “friends” aren’t who they appear to be… it involves witches and bullshit that she weaves together into a big ol’ lie tapestry for our rattled protagonist. What will obtaining this info hold for Darkly? I’ll sum it up for you; he goes completely off the deepest of deep fuckin’ ends. Existing in a bizarre world just a step left of our own, The Passion of Darkly Noon is a hell of a fever-dream thriller! Characters are either completely
