Blu-ray Review: Ultra Seven (1967 – 1968)

Continuing on with their presentation of the original Ultraman television episodes (the first two volumes of which I reviewed here), Mill Creek Entertainment brings us 1967’s Ultra Seven (which coincidentally is the Ultra series I’ve seen the most of thanks to TNT broadcasting dubbed episodes of the series in the mid-’90s). The long and the short of UltraSeven goes as follows: like a hot second from now, Earth finds itself balls deep in alien monsters… monsters that are hell bent on rippin’ our home turf a brand-new asshole. Not one to just sit on their collective asses, the Terrestrial Defense Force establishes the Ultra Garrison, a gaggle of folks that use the ultimate in technology to mix things up with those space bastards right quick! Now that’s all well and good, but the real ace-in-the-hole of the Garrison is the addition of Dan Moroboshi, a mystery man that isn’t really a “man” at all, but is in truth an alien

Blu-ray Review: Slaughterhouse-Five (1972)

Poor Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks), while just livin’ his life as a middle-aged optometrist, he keeps coming “unstuck” in time. One second he’s in the trenches of World War II, the next he’s on exhibit in a fancy zoo on the planet Tralfamadore, kicking it with sexy-ass Hollywood starlet Montana Wildhack (Valerie Perrine). That last one is pretty damn awesome, but unfortunately he must also cool his jets in a German POW camp in Dresden (the eponymous Slaughterhouse Five), or fight for his life after barely surviving a plane crash… all in any order the time stream feels is necessary. Will our hero find a happy end or just keep fast forwarding and rewinding his life’s events until he expires? Slaughterhouse-Five is one hell of a crazy ride cats n’ creeps! We get time travel, nazis, aliens, nudity… you know, the big ticket items, but things are never presented in a manner other than melancholy, introspective, and often blackly humorous.

‘Alien’ Anthology Series Is On Its Way

Alien is coming to the small screen for a series adaptation. Currently being developed with Ridley Scott on board, an Alien series is headed to Hulu, though no premiere date has been announced. We Got This Covered is reporting that according to their sources the series will be an anthology with each season taking place in a different part of the Alien universe. The franchise, now owned by Disney, may or may not be connected to the reboots that Disney is working on. Right now, information is being kept hush, hush. The site points out that the R-rated series could be “something special” if given the right budget and I agree. I hope the show does live up to what the franchise’s fans expect. We’ll keep you posted as more details are announced.

Movie Review: Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019)

Memory: The Origins of Alien, the new film from Director Alexandre O. Philippe takes a whole new tack in investigating the creation of Ridley Scott’s Alien; he sets his eerie eyeballs mostly on the period of time before the film began shooting, rather than showing us yet another “making-of” piece… and that is refreshing as all fuck boils n’ ghouls! To that end, much heed is paid to what may have influenced Writer Dan O’Bannon (Return of the Living Dead) to create this story in the first place with the much mentioned It: The Terror From Beyond Space and Mario Bava’s Planet of the Vampires, to lesser known (but obvious) inspiration culled from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and E.C. Comics, while creating his own unforgettable mythology and world building. Time is also spent examining cool-as-all-fuck late artist H.R. Giger’s undeniable influence on all things xenomorph, as well as what Scott brought to the table (though as the only surviving

Movie Review: Xenophobia (2019)

Holy hell, what do we have here cats n’ creeps? Why I do believe it’s an alien anthology of the terror kind! Following a coda, titled Pinnacles (written and directed by Stephen J. Escobar), that tells the story of Eric (Baker Chase Powell), a young dude getting his close encounter on in the middle of the desert; we are introduced to Xenophobia‘s wrap around (also written and directed by Escobar) featuring a support group for abductees relating their various diabolic dealings with sinister space-men through stories that include: First up we get Doomsday (written and directed by special effects genius Joe Castro); the tale of comely Becky (Kristen Renton) and her man Harry (Nick Principe of The FP and Chromeskull fame) who go camping in the woods and discover they are not alone in that freaky forest as one hell of a fucked up alien roams those worlds as well… seriously this thing has two faces, an emaciated body, screams

Blu-ray Review: The Dark Side of the Moon (1990)

In 2022, the crew of the Spacecore 1 (named after the first volume of the world’s foremost sci-fi themed porno film…okay, maybe not) are sent on a mission to repair a nuclear powered satellite floating above the moon. One p. hair later it appears as if the ol’ S.C. 1 is a rather huge hunk of shit of a spaceship (no matter what the ships fine A.F. female robot says), and our hapless heroes are stranded near the dark side of the moon. As if that wasn’t daunting enough, a derelict space shuttle floats by, and our crew decides to investigate the craft…only to find it’s crew missing; except for one very suspicious corpse. Speaking of that stiff; they bring it back to Spacecore 1 where it is soon revealed to contain some ancient star-borne evil…among other mysteries that spell one hell of an unpleasant voyage for our heroes! Truth be told, I had never even heard of The Dark

Happy Alien Day! For those not in the know, today is that day we celebrate the release of the first Alien film, and this year it’s special, not just because it’s the 4th annual Alien Day but it’s also the 40th Anniversary of the film’s release back in 1979! What better way to celebrate than with sharing some interesting trivia relating to the films. Warning, there may some spoilers ahead. The film series was originally going to be called Star Beast When production staff first met H.R. Giger to see if he would be perfect for the project, he offered them drugs. The members declined but asked Giger why he has them and he said it helped “Keep the nightmares away.”, the crew members knew right there he was perfect for the job. This leads to the following bit of info… H.R. Giger suffered from severe night terrors; he then took what he saw in his dreams and made them

Premiering today (March 29th as of this writing) is ALIEN: Containment: A small group find themselves stranded in a deep space escape pod, and one of them has been contaminated by an alien organism. What follows is a tense lil’ take on the tried and true tropes of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None with an enjoyable science fiction twist.
