Author Interview: John L. Davis of American Revenant Series

I’m doing something a bit different this week. Rather than posting a book review, I’m sharing an interview I had the opportunity to do for Gores Truly with author John L. Davis of the American Revenant series. He agreed to chat with me regarding the American Revenant series, and offered to give us some insight into himself, his process, and what we can expect from this shining new author in the future. If you are unfamiliar with Davis’ work, you can find a review of his debut novel American Revenant: Hometown Exodus. The series is set in Hannibal, MO and features a community of people who band together to survive a zombie apocalypse. It is honestly one of the best zombie series’ I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time, and I would encourage you to check it out if you haven’t. American Revenant: Hometown Exodus and American Revenant: Settlers and Sorrow are both available for Kindle download.

Benton: A Zombie Novel Vol. One

Aside: In honor of Women in Horror Month I will be reviewing a book or comic written by female authors or which prominently featuring female characters for each Monday in the month of February. There are plenty! This spotlight for female writers/characters in books and comics will be in addition to each of the Women in Horror Spotlights we are doing here at ZADF each day in February. (…and of course, this is also in addition to the sheer awesome Capt. McNeely and I contribute to the horror genre on a daily and weekly basis both on ZADF and beyond! ; ) ) At the bottom of each book review I will have links to the books discussed in previous weeks so that you can see who else has been featured! This will be the last special “Women In Horror” month female author feature. Thanks everyone who submitted book recommendations! The good news is that even without a special month

Champagne Jackson Kicks Zombie Ass: An Apocalyptic Horror Novel by F. A. Tallahassee

Champagne Jackson Kicks Zombie Ass, an Apocalyptic Horror Novel, blending Action and Adventure with Thrills and Chills. It’s Armageddon, supernatural stuff is going down and there really is no more room in hell. Our feisty heroine, Champagne Jackson kicks a lot of zombie ass, strings together some choice profanities and learns how to survive the horrors of a world gone mad. She has Marine Sergeant Mike Wilkins along, together with two resourceful Hispanic children, so if they work together, maybe, just maybe, the zombie horde won’t know what’s hit it. Of course, if the walking dead don’t kill you, the living will. There’s the Gravedigger Crew, a powerful black gang run by the man mountain known as Tiny Tyler, together with his lieutenant, Lord Slice, a killer midget, who’s deadly with any edged weapon. Plus there’s the Marauders, a vicious white supremacist outfit who are on the rampage through the new urban wasteland and taking no prisoners. And last, but

Omega Zombie by Allen Gandy

Omega Zombie is the second title I have read by Alan Gandy. (The first of which was a collaboration comic called Them.) This book is as unique as it gets. To give you a slight insight into the book’s style, I provide the description from Amazon. “Hello and goodbye. My name is Penny Goodfellow and I am about to die. Again… After tonight, there will be no more monsters. You see, I’m the last.” Great start, right? Originality 5/5 If it were possible to give a book a higher rating on originality, I would definitely do so for Omega zombie. The premise is delightfully ridiculous. (I will do my best to avoid spoilers, as always, but there were zombies, vampires, mention of fishmen, and Satanists come to bring forth the anti-christ. Oh boy!) The narrator is a 15 year old girl, and it is her destiny to destroy the world rather than to destroy it. This book flips the script

Zombie Rules by David Achord

Zach Gunderson’s life sucked and then the zombie apocalypse began. Rick, an aging Vietnam veteran, alcoholic, and prepper, convinces Zach that the apocalypse is on the horizon. The two of them take refuge at a remote farm. As the zombie plague rages, they face a terrifying fight for survival. They soon learn however that the walking dead are not the only monsters. Originaltiy 5/5 & Entertainment 5/5 In Zombie Rules David Achord successfully executes the premise that you are reading a zombie novel told from the perspective of a teenager. What makes this particular book unique, aside from the perspective itself, are the events which unfold. Zach’s world collapses shortly before the rest of the world follows suit. Eight of the initial chapters are spent following Zach through his every day life and establishing that he does in fact have prime reason to be miserable. His parents are dead, his grandmother falls ill suddenly after a stroke and passes shortly

Voodoo Plague by Dirk Patton

Voodoo Plague by Dirk Patton is an excellent book and although I hate to end the year on the start of a series, I’m thrilled to be able to round out 2014 on a positive note! The book was published just one year ago this month, so I’m grateful to be able to recommend it so highly so recently after its first birthday. Synopsis: John Chase has just arrived in Atlanta on a business trip when America experiences the worst attacks in history. Nuclear bombs destroy cities and the widespread release of nerve gas sends the majority of the surviving population into a murderous rage. Rescuing a woman who survived the attacks he must lead her to safety as Atlanta burns, raging infected roam unchecked and society disintegrates into savagery. Entertainment 5/5 & Writing Style 5/5 This novel is clever, fast paced, and incredibly engaging. The narration is in the first person perspective and the characters are incredibly likable. This,

Dead Drunk: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse… One Beer at a Time & Dead Drunk II: Dawn of the Deadbeats

Dead Drunk: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse… One Beer At A Time & Dead Drunk II: Dawn of the Deadbeats [If you aren’t sure if you want to read these titles after reading this review, you can also check out Weekend at Vidu’s, a short by author Richard Johnson that will help introduce you to author Richard Johnson’s writing style and some of the characters from the Dead Drunk series.] Synopsis of Dead Drunk: Charlie Campbell was your average, balding, thirty-year-old alcoholic with a dead-end job and a penchant for shambling through life one mistake after another. However, none of that mattered following the sudden arrival of a mysterious sickness that brought with it infected mobs of zombie-like creatures thirsting for the flesh of the living. Trapped in a Chicago apartment the morning after a raucous bachelor party, Charlie and his old fraternity buddies must battle for survival against the cannibalistic horde, a military invasion and their own rampant stupidity. American Revenant: Hometown Exodus

American Revenant: Hometown Exodus by John L. Davis IV is, without a doubt, my favorite zombie book of the year. That’s basically it, all I have to say. I’ll elaborate more, but that’s the take home message. At $0.99 (that’s ninety-nine cents USD) you can’t afford to not own this book if you’re serious about zombie fiction. …Okay, so you know me better than to assume that I was actually done, but the point is that I could be. I’ll give you the tldr version first: This novel hits the ground running with enough action to keep me actively engaged from the first few pages on. There was never a dull moment, either in terms of what was going on, or in terms of the word choices that Davis used. The dialogue between characters is realistic and seamless, unlike the extended monologues or useless banter-driven conversations that frequently are used to kill time or narrate occurrences in place of actual
