‘Van Helsing’ Reboot Reportedly Has Chosen It’s Star

The “Dark Universe” didn’t exactly get off to a good start with The Mummy, but Universal won’t let the franchise die, with everything from The Wolfman to The Hunchback of Notre Dame getting adaptations. I’d be more shocked than Frankenstein’s Monster if even half these films actually get made, but who knows, I’m no fortune teller. Out of the five or six films slated to come out, the only one I really felt any amount of excitement for was Van Helsing. The whole concept of an international monster hunter is a neat idea, and the 2004 adaptation didn’t really do the concept justice. Well that excitement’s sunk into the Black Lagoon with the announcement that Magic Mike pretty boy Channing Tatum is reportedly up for the role. Best known for being the worst part of The Hateful Eight and being the most meh part of 21 Jump Street, Tatum’s casting shows both that Universal hasn’t learned dick from The Mummy

Hear Robert Englund Voice an Iconic Batman Character in Injustice 2

If you want to add some credibility to your fighting game character, having Freddy Krueger voice him isn’t a bad way to do it. And on that happy note, Netherrealm Studio’s has decided to throw horror fans a bone, with the iconic Batman villain Scarecrow being voiced by the one and only Robert England in their upcoming DC fighting game, Injustice 2. Shown here in a new trailer, titled It‘s Good To Be Bad, Scarecrow might fight with a bladed chain rather than a clawed glove, but Fred’s penchant for nightmares and horrifying alternate realities is kept intact. While the trailer doesn’t show a whole lot of Scarecrow, England’s unmistakable voice rings through; and with unique opening dialogue for every combatant, Rob will be getting a lot to jabber on about. And no, while this isn’t quite as awesome as Freddy Krueger vs Batman, it might just be the next best thing.

Movie Review: THE BELKO EXPERIMENT is a Battle Royale of Staplers

Eighty Office Drones with bombs in their heads, a kitchen filled with knives, a locker full of firearms, and a mysterious voice in the ceiling commentating on a game of death; what else could a horror fan ask for? With The Belko Experiment, writer and producer James Gunn harkens back to his Troma roots, delivering an over the top ode to carnage, nihilism, and primal savage. While the film’s message might muddled under an ocean of gore, and whatever insight it had to offer blown away like a Belko Employee’s cranium, Experiment offers what’s likely to be the most bloody fun time you’ve had in awhile; that is if your soul (and your stomach) can handle it. Belko’s premise is simple, with similarities that can be traced all the way back to Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery. 80 employees of the Belko Corporation, each with a bomb stuck in their head, are locked in their building and given two options; kill

John Williams Merges Humor and Horror in New Film “Crispy’s Curse”

Horror hits the funny bone with Crispy’s Curse. Director John Williams (The Slayers) brings demonic clown back in his new film. Humanity’s only possible saviors are a Christian metal band called Messiah’s Fist. Laughter, gore, demons, and heavy metal all merge to make a delightfully fun. Even Better, you can contribute to this gem in the horror canon buy contributing to its Indiegogo campaign. “Crispy’s Curse is a feature film that follows a christian heavy metal band as they do battle with a ghostly, demonic, murderous…but quite charming clown called Crispy. Crispy must be stopped before the towns population decreases further as he seeks bloody revenge on the ones that had him killed. I aim to raise £8000 for vital post production and promotion work on the film, to do this i have selected a range of incentives in the form of perks, including a copy of the movie on completion.” “He belongs in the pits of hell, but he

Krampus: The Christmas Demon

It’s been in vogue the past couple of years to address Santa’s counterpart, Krampus. Cartoon appearances, a few movies (one of which was a major motion picture), t-shirts and sweaters, various other media are all filling up with this Christmas Demon. But, where did he come from? Why did he disappear? And why is he back? So, sit back, get cozy on a chair in your new Christmas pajamas, and let’s explore the legend of this anamorphic demon. The origin time period of Krampus is unknown. Like St. Nicholas, he pre-dates Christianity and has been found in Alpine regions, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic, he has stretched all through Europe and around the world. It seems, however, that his origins are in Norse folklore. The daughter of Loki (yup, Thor’s brother) is named Hel and oversees the land of the dead. Legend is it that she bore a son to an unknown father who she named Krampus

Frankenstein is Not My Name

At my day job, I dress up in a shirt, tie and polished shoes. I am not a shirt, tie and polished shoes kind of guy. Therefore, I have found fun little ways to break out of the tie-noose, things like various colors of shoelaces and funky belt buckles. No, I’m no Wolowitz, but I am happy with my little collection. Among my favorite are a couple of different skull buckles, Freddy Krueger’s claw and the head of Frankenstein’s monster. I know, by now you are asking “what’s the point?” But here it is. In my opinion, in the monster world there are the big four: Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy, and Frankenstein’s Monster. I do believe that there are very close second tier villains like Kruger, Voorhees, Ghost Face, Swamp Thing, and then spirals down into an infinite number of characters, but I want to focus on the Big Four. Here’s the point: The monster has no name? Yes, people

Road to Death House Part 4: Open Letter

Friday. November 11th. Death House is officially done. Like the 2016 election, it will soon be in the hands of the people to make their decision. Hear my personal views on this film at 22:30 here on Postmortem Radio just published Nov. 8, 2016: HERE https://www.horrorphilia.com/postmortem-radio-episode-016-inside-death-house-wdirector-harrison-smith/ It’s been a long road. Gunnar Hansen, who created the project, is not here to see it emerge from the post production studio. We wrapped principal photography May 5th. Six months later we have a finished film. it is true…making a movie is akin to a minor miracle. Making one with the largest collection of horror names in a single picture, to date…that’s something else. This is a personal entry from me on this film. From its director and its writer. It’s not a pitch. Those who want to see it will see it. Those who don’t will likely see it anyway. Many will love it. Some won’t. It’s the way it goes anytime

Ode to 80’s Horror: A Nightmare on Elm Street

In honor of Halloween approaching (everyone’s favorite holiday) and whispers of the second remake happening (Kevin Bacon, anyone?) this #Odeto80s is on that 1986 Wes Craven classic: A Nightmare on Elm Street. WHERE IT CAME FROM: Wes Craven had already had horror movie success when he read a series of disturbing articles in the newspaper: “It was a series of articles in the LA Times, three small articles about men from South East Asia, who were from immigrant families and had died in the middle of nightmares—and the paper never correlated them, never said, ‘Hey, we’ve had another story like this.” Crave took this horrifying premise and paired it with his own terrifying childhood memory of a creepy man that had come to his window , and put a red and green striped sweater on it to create Freddy Krueger. WHY WE LOVE IT: Nightmare is arguably Craven’s greatest work, leaving the audience feel unsafe: even in their sleep. Aside

Ode to 80’s Horror: The Hellraiser Series

If you Google “80’s Horror”, one of the first movies that’s going to pop up is Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, along with it’s multiple (and extremely varying) sequels. Hellraiser is a Horror Film’s Horror Film. It’s a movie that any horror aficionado worth his or her salt knows and appreciates. Personally, it’s my favorite horror film (well- it’s really a three way tie between Hellraiser, Evil Dead 2, and Reanimator, but there’s time for that later.) so I couldn’t think of a better way to kick of this #Odeto80sHorror than by exploring Kirsty Cotton and her Cenobite counterparts. WHERE IT CAME FROM: The original 1987 Hellraiser film was an adapted from noted horror author Clive Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart (it’s a quick read; I highly recommend it.) Barker would also direct the 1987 film. The screenplay adapts a romantic relationship into a father/daughter relationship, and our heroine, the young and scrappy Kirsty Cotton (played by a young Ashley Lawrence) ,
