Movie Review: Investigation 13 (2019)

A gaggle of science-type students have taken it upon themselves to prove that the things that go bump in the night are really real… and if they can convince the college board of their findings than they will be on easy street, ya dig? As you may surmise from that title up yonder, the final investigation to prove their point is ol’ unlucky number thirteen, which takes our protagonists deep within Black Grove Psychiatric Asylum where they set out to examine the legend of The Mole Man; a former patient of ye olde loony-bin who is thought to still haunt those unhallowed halls. Of course, this being a fright flick and all, members of the group pull a vanishing act and our remaining heroes must deal with the fact that ol’ Double M is a very real threat to their continued existence! Let’s get down to brass fuckin’ tacks; Investigation 13 doesn’t exactly break new and exciting ground in our

Movie Review: Horror Movie: A Low Budget Nightmare (2017)

Director Craig Anderson is like a lot of us… a middle-aged man who hasn’t given up the dream of making his own fright flick. So he leaves his television gig and actually makes a film; 2016’s Red Christmas (which I reviewed in another life right here); a lil’ ditty about an aborted fetus that lives, grows up and decides to get sweet revenge on mommy dearest come Yuletide. Now you may say; “Why in the unholy fuck would I give two generous shits about the making of a film I (probably) never saw?” The answer to that is simple; “Because you need to see the absolute hell filmmaking can be if you aren’t properly prepared.” The main area that unpreparedness shows is in the budgeting of the film… Anderson’s budget, meager to begin with, continues to grow, and he has to bust ass and make many a sacrifice (including totally sucking the teat of his life savings dry as a

Movie Review: Artik (2019)

Comic book addicted mountain-man lookin’ mother fucker Artik (Jerry G. Angelo) spends his days hunting the bleak town in which he lives and it’s outskirts for fresh victims for his serial killer proclivities helped by his “son” Boy Adam (Gavin White)…a viscous feral lad, though one with an introspective side. Also on hand is Artik’s woman Flin Brays (indie horror darling Lauren Ashley Carter) and a cadre of farmhand children that live in their barn. Soon Boy befriends a troubled young man named Holton Shudcase (Chase Williamson) who learns that things are fucked up six ways to Sunday in that lil’ dude’s life, and when he tries to intervene it’s nearly certain that death will come a callin’ …you know, because Artik is a complete deranged lunatic with a hair-fucking-trigger for the ol’ murder biz and all! Artik on the surface seems like something the horror biz has brought us a bazillionty times…psycho hillbilly family lives on a farm where

Movie Review: Tales of Frankenstein (2018)

One of the more popular genres in our beloved horror biz these days is the arcane anthology, and while most of these are tied together by a basic, generic theme, it’s rare to see one with a laser sharp focus on one sinister subject. Well, to rectify that comes writer/director Donald F. Glut’s Tales of Frankenstein which focuses exclusively on Dracula… I’m just fuckin’ with ya, of course everyone’s fearsome fav pile of rando parts and stitches is the hot topic… in one form or another… Story Numero One-o, My Creation, My Beloved is set in the late 1800’s and focuses on a physically deformed relative of ol’ Victor F. who sets out to create the perfect man and woman. He kinda/sorta succeeds as the man is an Adonis type and the woman is gorgeous… well, except for the bolts in their foreheads, the angry stitch-work, and the dead flesh covering their beastly bones. This is a fun lil’ yarn,

Blu-ray Review: Darlin’ (2019)

Darlin’ features the various and sundry adventures of the eponymous title character (played by Lauryn Canny); a feral child who is dropped off at a hospital located at the edge of a snow covered forest by her equally feral mother; The Woman (played by the film’s director and writer, Pollyanna McIntosh… who we interviewed here, as a character featured in Lucky McKee’s movie of the same name… yup, this flick is a sequel to that very film, which in turn is based on the writing of Jack Ketchum). Darlin’ proves to be one hell of a handful, and is kept sedated until the staff can figure out her fate… a fate that is ultimately decided by the Catholic church (who funds the hospital) that sends her packing to ye olde Catholic orphanage. This of course complicates things when The Woman comes lookin’ for her offspring at the hospital, bearing her fav delicacy; human flesh. The Woman intends to find her

Movie Review: Eternal Code (2019)

It’s Ponce de Leon 2099 as a genetic research company type-o-deal has ciphered a way of prolonging human life… if you got the dough that is, dig? Naturally said company is as crooked as a dog’s hind leg, and the way they go about their research is what the scientific community labels “fuckin’ wrong as balls”. Fortunately, the company’s CEO Bridget Pellegrini (Erika Hoveland) is kinda “hell naw” on the whole affair, and she wants that shit to cease, pee-ronto. Well, her board of directors reacts to that like one would a fart in a submarine, and tries to get her to cool ‘er jets, as does the the man with the slick-as-shit name, Dr. Magnus (Yan Birch)… hell, even her hubs Mark (Billy Wirth) puts the guilt trip upon our harried heroine. Long story short; Bridget gets locked away by the company (as part of their Executive Kidnap Community Outreach Program) while Magnus and his assistant Nikita (Vida Ghaffari)

Movie Review: The Zombie Army (1991)

The Zombie Army begins the only way it could; with a maniac undergoing a radical classroom-based therapy sesh before being chucked back into the loony bin… which is immediately shut down by the government. While most of the patients and staff are moved to a new facility, the soldiers occupying the facility soon discover (thanks to some weed smokin’ grunts opening a top security room) that the most dangerous inmates now roam the halls and begin their mad murder spree… while also creating an army of zombies. Based on a true story… The Zombie Army is a prime slice of S.O.V. (shot on video for you novices out there) ghoulish goodness that truly displays a sense of “let’s put on a show no matter our skill level” aesthetic that is impossible to resist. This is the horror biz created by those that love it best; those that become so inspired by fright flicks that they simply pick up the family

DVD Review: Dead Ant (2017)

’80s hair metal band Sonic Grave are trying to get back in the game in the current age , and they are on the road to a hip music festival where they hope to attract new fans at the behest of their manager Danny (Tom Arnold). Along the way, bassist Art (Sean Astin) makes a pit stop for some legendary power-packed peyote… a drug that comes with a curse attached; if anything on the sacred land is harmed while on the drug a horrible fate will befall those responsible. I forgot to mention; Art isn’t the brightest dude out there, and neither are his band mates Merrick (Jake Busey), Stevie (Leisha Hailey), and Pager (Rhys Coiro) for that matter, and soon a talking ant is pissed on and a deadly evil is released which results in our heroes getting their creature-feature cherries popped by Hymenoptera from hell! Holy fuckin’ cats, Dead Ant is a rollickin’ good time in our beloved

Movie Review: Seaside (2018)

Daphne (Ariana DeBose) has it tough as she works a right shit job and has to care for her hard-luck momma (Sharon Washington). But all isn’t dumpster fires and frowns for our heroine, as she is having a secret fling with Roger (Matt Shingledecker), a dude in kind of a similar sitch as he is charged with caring for his old (literally) man… until Pops buys the farm that is. We soon learn Rog has inherited a seaside beach house, and he drags ol’ Daphne out there where she meets Susanna (Steffanie Leigh); one of Roger’s exes. Now let me just say the film opens with a crime scene and we have to piece together who is the victim in that scenario… so put your weird-ass Sherlock Holmes hat on and try to cram those puzzle pieces together into some sort of clear picture! While that set-up may seem to have some spark to it, I have to say Seaside

Blu-ray Review: Cruising (1980)

A serial killer has marked gay men frequenting New York’s meat packing district; home to the S/M and leather scene, and he’s been dismembering them like a beastly butcher! Thankfully police officer Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is placed deep undercover onto the streets to try and draw the killer out. Soon our hero becomes almost completely isolated from his previous life as his new fabricated existence consumes him. Will Steve be able to catch the killer and remain who he is? Comprised of a stellar cast (besides the aforementioned Pacino; Paul Sorvino, Karen Allen, James Remar, Ed O’ Neill and the Maniac himself Joe Spinell round out the roster), a brutal mystery to solve, a deep-dive into a subculture not often examined, and the unbeatable grit and grime of late ’70s/early ’80s Manhattan; Cruising is a rock-solid horror film dressed in thriller clothing. Among all of that goodness, there is of course the ol’ elephant in the room that should
