Movie Review: Nefarious (2019)

Darren (Buck Braithwaite), Lou (Nadia Lamin), Jo (Abbey Gillett) and Mas (Omari Lake-Pottinger) are scratchin’ and survivin’ in an environment of poverty. Trying to get over, they become indebted to ye olde local crime lord; a totally reasonable and not at all violence prone individual…just fuckin’ with you; this dude makes them worried about their continued existence 24/7. Meanwhile, richie-rich sumbitch Marcus (Toby Wynn-Davies) and his disabled bro Clive (Gregory A. Smith) get even richer when they win the lottery. Hearing this bit o’ news, our troubled heroes decide to get their steal on to improve their shitty lives…this of course doesn’t go as planned. Violence ensues! Now of course home invasion thrillers are nothing new, and at it’s core Nefarious isn’t either…it has all the tropes of the genre, but I don’t think re-inventing the wicked wheel was the goal here. Co-Writer (along with Matthew Davies)/Director Richard Rowntree instead decides to concentrate on a slick visual style (aided and

Movie Review: Debunkers, Inc. (2019)

The Debunkers; amateur detectives, video game enthusiasts, eternal virgins… okay, I made that last bit up, but it can be inferred with a large probability of being true… wait, where was I? Oh yeah, The Debunkers; Link (Josh Pinkowski), Snake (Izzy Pollak) and Dr. Mario (Blake Kevin Dwyer)… along with new recruit, Canadian foreign exchange student Shiek (Nicole DuBois) are the premier mystery debunking business in their town, a town that doesn’t exactly seem like it would be a hotbed of mysteries which makes their profit margin rather low I’d wager. Of course that all changes when two desperate girls, Heather and Joyce by name, come a-knocking with a real puzzler… figuring out who put the murder biz on their gal pal Nina. With a murderer around, The Debunkers will surely die… the end… okay, maybe they will prevail and become true heroes… but my money is on their demise. Look, I’ll lay it on the line here, Debunkers Inc.

Movie Review: Empathy, Inc (2018)

Poor Joel (Zack Robidas) has lost his job, but all is not food stamps, pot noodles, and The Price is Right for our hero as an old friend invites him to invest in a new company Empathy, Inc. What exactly does this operation provide to it’s customers? Why the ability for it’s rich-ass customers to experience life as someone that has nothing by inhabiting their body through VR technology and therefore appreciate what they have in life more. Absolutely nothing will go awry here. Now honestly, unemployed Joel could just wait a bit and experience this for real minus all the technology and doo-dads, but I digress… So, what does Empathy, Inc have going for it? First of all; director Yedidya Gorsetman and screenwriter Mark Leidner have delivered a hell of a tight sci-fi thriller with a nice undercurrent of mystery that keeps your putrid peepers locked on the screen throughout, and the truth behind the VR experiment pays off

Movie Review: Nekrotronic (2019)

From the dawn of time, a cadre of Nekromancers has battled legions of demons for the fate of the world. As it is the age of smart phones being perma-glued to people’s hands (though as you will see, this film gives zero-fucks about presenting anything as lofty as social commentary); the Queen of the Underworld (the always jaw-dropping Monica Bellucci) is developing an app that will allow those dastardly demons to wage cyber warfare on an unsuspecting mankind who think the app is a simple ghost finding program, rather than a means of swipin’ their very souls. This brings us to dopey sanitation worker named Howard (Ben O’Toole) and his equally clueless best friend (Epine Bob Savea). You see Howard’s legacy is to become the ultimate Nekromancer and he is tasked with ending that arcane app and the Queens machinations for good. Our world is pretty much fucked. Coming from Co-Writer (along with Tristan Roache-Turner)/Director Kiah Roache-Turner (who previously brought

Movie Review: Into the Dark: School Spirit (2019)

Goody-two-shoes Erica (Annie Q) unbelievably finds herself slammed into weekend detention, and before you can say “This shit seems like The Breakfast Club” she suffers the barbs of the various reprobates stuck in there with her as well as the ‘tude of the gruff-as-all-shit Vice Principal runnin’ the show. Said hard ass makes our “heroes” clean up the school as punishment, before retiring to his office to appease that ol’ demon in a bottle. Talk among that gang of goofs soon turns to the urban legend of a g-g-ghost dressed as an admiral that haunts those hallowed halls…and the fact some of them believe said specter is behind students that have recently gone missing. Soon the kids end up being locked in the school, and of course what was thought to be mere legend is in fact a murderous reality! Definitely the most lightweight of the Into the Dark series thus far, School Spirit is a by the numbers, teen

Short Film Review: Cole & Colette (2019)

Colette (Becca Buckalew) is a woman home alone doin’ a lil’ housework when she sees a news report detailing yet another missing woman in the area. Fortunately for her, the love of her life Cole (Matt McAbee) is heading home post-haste. Of course she doesn’t remain alone for long, but just who is in her house, and what do they truly want… Running just under six minutes, Cole & Colette packs a lot of suspense in it’s brief runtime…not to mention some great twists and turns. Writer Harker Jones along with Director Matt Boda actually manage to bring something new to that beloved horror biz trope; the stranger in the house…accompanied by news bulletins detailing a menace on the loose…seriously this shit was a “thing” all the way back in ’50’s era Tom and Jerry cartoons (Down Beat Bear for those of you keeping track at home)…probably even before, I’m not doing anymore research, my fingers are exhausted), yet it

Blu-ray Review: Alice, Sweet Alice (1976)

Paterson, New Jersey, 1961: Catherine Spages (Linda Miller) is mother to two children; the hell-raisin’, mask wearin’, black sheep Alice (Paula E. Sheppard) and the favored child, the pampered Karen (a young Brooke Shields) who both attend St. Michael’s Parish Girls’ School. Naturally Alice spends her days fucking with the innocent Karen (usually adorned in a mask and a yellow raincoat) six ways to Sunday. On the day of her first communion, Karen is strangled, dumped in a bench, and lit on fire by someone decked out in the coat and mask favored by Alice…but is she the culprit? It sure appears so, especially after her mega-bitch aunt, Anne (Jane Lowry), is attacked by our familiar foe…though Alice attests that it is her dead sister causing the mayhem! As the body count rises, will Alice be revealed to be not guilty or will the truth be even more sinister? Filled with a surreal vibe, plenty of religious iconography, a sense

Blu-ray Review: Universal Horror Collection, Vol. 2 (1933 – 1943)

Coming hot on the heels of their release of Universal Horror Collection, Vol. 1 (which I reviewed right here), Scream Factory brings us four more terror tales in the appropriately named Universal Horror Collection, Vol. 2! Let’s dig into this shit like a grave, shall we? First up comes: Murders in the Zoo (1933): Man o’ action Eric Gorman (Lionel Atwill) heads back stateside from parts unknown where he was collecting animals for the local zoo with his his wife Evelyn (the gorgeous Kathleen Burke). Speaking of ol’ Evelyn; Eric straight up murdered a man for kissing her on that very trip. Because Evelyn apparently is constructed of pure sex pheromones, a dude by the handle of Roger Hewitt (John Lodge) falls in horny with her on the boat ride home…imagine Eric’s feelings about that one. Speaking of which, since Eric is always a level-headed fellow he puts the kibosh on Hewitt using a black mamba (clearly a python standing

Movie Review: Iron Sky: The Coming Race (2019)

Twenty years after the events of the first Iron Sky film (the 2012 flick that detailed Hitler’s exile to the dark side of the moon at the end of World War II where he plans his decades-in-the-making revenge…which ultimately was unsuccessful, but did lead to a freakin’ nuclear war, so there’s that) we pick up with the adventures of survivors of that aforementioned cataclysm taking up residence in the now abandoned Nazi moon base. All is not well however, as the colony is a mess, and the base is crumbling to shit. Things look up however when more folks from Earth arrive, and lend hope in the telling of tales concerning a secret city hidden deep within the bowels of the Earth. Obi Washington (Lara Rossi), the daughter of the colony’s leader Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), assembles a misfit team and heads down to the ol’ Big Blue Marble to see how viable this place is to set up shop.

Movie Review: She’s Just a Shadow (2019)

In just under seven minutes, She’s Just a Shadow presents us with a murderous police officer tying up a naked woman to train tracks and beating off to completion before a train smashes her to shit and back, images of a surreal orgy, a naked woman having a fine sushi dinner eaten off of her naked body, and a pool hall brawl that features roughly 4,567 gallons of blood splashed around. Does all that set your exploitation Spidey-sense tingling? Then buckle up mother fucker, ‘cuz this flick is gonna take you for one hell of a fucked up ride! Long story short, that fap-happy cop mentioned above is a serial killer, and that train track stunt is his bag baby. We also get introduced to a madam and her cadre of Harajuku-overload hookers, and a collection of gangster types, and before long their stories intersect in hyper-sexual and ultra-violent ways… Now with this particular flick, the style is of equal
