Sinister Shorts Featuring: Slash (2018), Stay Quiet (2018), and Innards (2014)

With the new year comes a veritable ass-load of short fright flicks that fine fiends have asked me to lay my putrid peepers upon (or like three…but one man’s small amount is another man’s ass-load I never say…). So without further ado, here comes some bite-sized revoltin’ reviews! Slash (2018): Callum (Michael Mowen) is just tryin’ to enjoy a sinister slasher pic, but his gal pal Sydney (Chloe Carroll…who also produced the film) is riding his ass like a cheap suit calling out every beloved stalk n’ slay trope and giving it a savage roasting that will have you wishing ol’ C-dawg would throw her out on her ear. Of course soon the tables turn, and Sydney finds herself in just the situation she so mercilessly took jabs at, but will she fare any better than the characters on the silver screen? Running at a brief eight minutes and change, Slash is a great skewering of that one mother fucker

Short Film Review: Date from Hell (2018)

You know how I do the ol’ “Once in a blue moon, a horror short comes along that really tickles the ol’ preternatural pickle…” routine, then I lay my award losing “This ain’t it” punchline in there to thunderous (or is that nonexistent…) applause? Well, this ain’t that! Date From Hell weaves a terror tale of two mismatched lovers; the meek Bobby (Samuel Brett Howard), and the manipulative Susie (Ava L’Amoreaux). these two get into a bit of a lovers spat before engaging in some rather strange date night rituals…but things are soon complicated by the arrival of a third wheel…and a potentially psychotic one at that. I can’t say more without givin’ away the entire thing…but let’s just say this fright flick goes in some deviously delightful and unexpected directions boys n’ ghouls! Written (along with Co-Writer/Producer Tracee Beebe) and Directed by Ven Scott (who in turn is the vocalist for metal band Runescarred…and you know how we love

Short Film Review: BFF Girls (2018)

A gaggle of anime otaku femmes (played by Allison Maier, Jessica Shipp, and Syndey Thomas respectively) discuss periods and fend off the pervy advances of their talking cat, Neko Sensei (voiced by Laurence R. Harvey from The Human Centipede sequels). Meanwhile on a planet far away from our own, super pervert Fabuloso Doom (Lawrence Sykkmon) consults with his evil magic mirror (voiced by Dana Snyder) about how he can conquer our comely, though decidedly off-limits legally, heroines and stay eternally young and beautiful…which of course he interprets as a need to consume period blood (as anyone would). To that need he unleashes his evil monster Anti-Flow (Lea Enslin) which triggers our heroines transformation into the BFF (Beautiful Fantasy Flower ) Girls (played by Marilyn Chung, Jessica Nam, Carolann Utley) and a bloody good battle ensues! Short Film Review: Soundbite (2018)

A woman (Taylor Murphy-Sinclair) sits a computer and enters a website comprised of a single image of a skull. Seems mundane enough, until the creepy commands start issuing forth… Running a brisk four minutes and change; Soundbite is a nice lil’ bite sized nugget of video violence with a sprinkling of techo terror (or is it supernatural shenanigans to blame? You boils n’ ghouls will have to decide for yourselves when you slap your eerie eyeballs on he flick after these wicked words…). Co-writer (along with Brantley J. Brown)/Director Michael Coulombe delivers a simple, basically one sentence concept with a stylish flair that makes the whole affair satisfying even without anything in the way of character development, dialog (minus one key phrase), or even explanation as to what is going on. Fright-Rags Digs Up Pet Sematary, Night Of The Living Dead, and Die Hard Collections

Fright-Rags has explored sour ground to unearth new merchandise from Pet Sematary, Night of the Living Dead, and Die Hard. Dead is better with Fright-Rags‘ Pet Sematary collection. From little Gage and Church the cat to Victor Pascow and Zelda, all of the nightmarish imagery from the 1989 Stephen King adaptation is represented on four new T-shirts. Fright-Rags continues its Night of the Living Dead 50th anniversary celebration with a new shirt, two enamel pins, and a pair of socks from George A. Romero’s seminal classic. The company also made Dead Neighbors, a short film that imagines what may have inspired Romero as a young boy. Keep an eye out for a cameo from Night of the Living Dead‘s Russell Streiner! Their Die Hard merchandise will have you saying “Yippee ki-yay!” throughout the holiday season. See Pauly Shore in a role like never before, as a psychotic serial killer in his new short psychological thriller Sin City Psycho which he also wrote, directed, and produced as a proof of concept. I’ve always wanted to play a psychopath, what actor doesn’t? I’ve been known for comedy my entire life, so it was really fun to dig in and do something unexpected. Short Film Review: 5:29 See the Devil’s Eyes (2018)

In 5:29 See the Devil’s Eyes, we are treated to graphic representation of a Bible passage, Matthew 5:29 “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” to be precise. Devoid of narrative or dialog, 5:29 See the Devil’s Eyes distills the passage above to a single image; that of a woman (Kaylee Giza), mutilated in a representation of sin who steps forward to reveal an even more horrific nightmare hidden under her dark hair. Director Ryan Swnatek presents the whole grizzly tableau in a lurid color scheme straight out of the Italian fright flicks of old (with a nod to Argento if I’m not mistaken). It’s a pleasing dichotomy of beauty and ugliness which is also echoed in the main character who’s feminine charm is forever marred by grievous injury. Speaking

Short Film Review: Trick r’ Treat (2018)

Trick r’ Treat begins with a woman (Julie Landriault) finding a stack of missing children flyers on the windshield of her car. Later that night she receives a visit from some ghostly trick r’ treaters (Johnny Elston, Ricky Elston, and Daniel Elston) who may not be what they seem! Running a compact minute and thirty seconds (two minutes with credits), Trick r’ Treat is an effective lil’ supernatural shocker. Writer/Director Andrew J.D. Robinson presents the piece with an economy of storytelling, and with some fun cinematic touches. The first act is presented in stark black and white giving it a Night of the Living Dead vibe, while the second have is presented in warm colors…it’s well done and gives the two disparate acts a unique flavor. Also well done are the visuals for the trick r’ treaters themselves…simple sheets and a bit of make-up adds up to a palpable sense of menace from these terror tykes! Bottom line, Trick r’

Short Film Review: The Devil and I (2018)

In Colonial Canada, a woman (Ariel Hansen) with an uneasy lot in life takes some verbal tongue lashin’ from a real son of a bitch of a man (James Kingstone)…a son of a bitch that freezes into a human statue as a large talking dog appears (yeah, sometimes I can’t believe the shit I type for this website either…but trust me, this is actually handled in a completely serious and somber manner). Any way it seems our heroine has been having affair with the man’s wife, and before you can say Son of Sam(uel Adams), that preternatural pup (played by Apollo with voice provided by Jesse Inocalla) gives our protagonist a plan to make things go her way. With it’s unique, period setting and near-fairy tale vibe, The Devil and I is an entertaining slice of short fright flick deviltry. Adding to the overall vibe of the piece are authentic costumes and manners of speaking that reflect the film’s 1800’s

Short Film Review: The Eyes That See in the Dark (2018)

Man-oh-man is ol’ Christina (Jessica Blaney) ever in some dire straits boils n’ ghouls! You see, it seems she’s inadvertently turned her body into a human AirBnB after a failed seance of sorts, and a dastardly demon has rented that shit out with the quickness! To try and remedy this, her mother (Maria C. Blaney) has called in a duo of holy men (Andrew Hunsicker and Gabriel Brandis) to try and get that sinister squatter to vamoose, but that goes over like a fart in a submarine and before long a second demon (Jeffrey Scott) makes the scene and things go from bad, to really fucking bad! The Eyes That See in the Dark is one hell (pun always intended) of a cool lil’ fright flick! It takes the tried and true exorcism trope, gives it a slight twist or two, and delivers a satisfying bite sized horror flick that will doubtless satisfy fans of the possession sub-genre.
