Short Film Review: The Drawing (2020)

A tortured artist (Christian Grose) has a real wild hair up his ass about a cloaked figure that keeps showing up in his drawings… even if he didn’t actually draw the entity with his putrid pencil. As the night goes on, that cloaked sumbitch proves he isn’t a mere eerie etching, and our hero won’t be able to just erase the darkness as he does in his scary sketchbook! Running a brief six minutes, this sinister short manages to set up a great lil’ conceit, namely; the artist that brings evil to life through his art… which has a true classical feel in my not so humble opinion. This gives the piece a nice sense of mythology, which sets off the joltin’ jump scares (that actually work) and gives everything a sense of depth… no easy feat given the runtime! All in all writer/director Dominic Grose (aided and abetted by the arcane artwork of Deidre Hume) has crafted a nice

The Fear Crypt Premiere of Horror Short FEED Arrives on 06/02!

Guess what boils n’ ghouls? Good ol’ Fear Crypt has acquired the non exclusive YouTube streaming rights to the short horror film Feed; which will have it’s premiere on 06/02. Why should you give a fearsome fuck about that? Well, Feed is described by it’s creators thusly: “Feed (directed by Will Lee) is a film born out of a simple goal: to create a classic horror moment. We felt drawn to slashers and creature features that had those iconic opening scenes where you catch a glimpse of what’s to come. Aesthetics and themes from movies like The Ring (2002) and Pulse (2001) were huge influences. We wanted to capture the dread of the paranormal while staying rooted in a single location. Sounds creepy cool A.F. to me! Set your eerie eyeballs here to be among the first to catch Feed on it’s Fear Crypt premiere comin’ your wicked way on 06/02!

Short Film Review: The Leaves (2020)

A young couple moves into a house as suspended autumnal leaves hang in the air… and let me tell you cats n’ creeps, that is but one odd occurrence that’ll be plaguing these folks in the immediate future. Add to the mix a set of neighbors that definitely know there is some sort of shocking secrets within those wicked walls, a set of glowing eyes, a bizarre board game that reveals intimate details of the player’s lives… so yeah, odd to say the least… It’s that strangeness that runs throughout writer/director Matt Rasmussen’s The Leaves that makes this sinister short a wicked winner! Everything from the dialog, to the acting, to the narrative plays out like a fever dream. Hostilities rise and the possibility of other existences are explored while characters deliver lines that seem weighted with an arcane knowledge we as the viewer do not possess. All of the above gives the entire affair a style and flavor all

Short Film Review: Disco Graveyard (2020)

The one and only Izzy Lee (Innsmouth) is back with her latest short film Disco Graveyard; a stock footage soiree swan diving into a fever dream! Created in a punk rock, found art style, Disco Graveyard could be boiled down as such; it’s a commencement speech intended for the Children of the Damned. As each carefully selected image flashes before our putrid peepers, it is Izzy herself (if you’re keeping score at home; Lee wrote, directed, produced, and stars in this flick) that delivers strangely comforting platitudes (for example: “Don’t be dead, the dead are dumb. Be weird”) that espouse how it is a good thing to be a complete weirdo (a parable your’s cruelly surely takes to my lil’ ol’ black heart). Also on hand is an excellent score by Lee’s long-time composer Shayne Gryn, and some impressive editing courtesy of Michael J. Epstein (Blood of the Tribades). To sum it up, these are the words of wisdom folks

Short Film Review: The Garden (1910)

As many of you fine fiends know; your’s cruelly digs on the silent films… the wonders the movie maestros of the past could conjure up were true works of art, and one of the best was French illusionist/filmmaker Georges Méliès… speaking of ol’ Big G; the filmmaker behind The Garden (1910), is obviously a passionate fan, as every decadent frame of the film looks to create the aesthetic and artistry of Méliès oeuvre… and that surely tickles my putrid pickle cats n’ creeps! As usual we segue seamlessly from a penis joke to the Bible. While that particular tome is really not my bag in any way, shape, or form, I can easily dig on this short which is a telling of Genesis via the medium of silent film… film using the same practical traditions (or representations thereof) that graced the silver screen circa the early 1900’s. As you may guess, things are kept on the black and white-ish tip

Short Film Review: The Amulet of Fear (2020)

A woman (Ludovica Ferraro) is home alone one moonlit night, and happens across an arcane amulet located within a wicked wicker basket… and once said moonlight falls upon that jazzy jewelry a monster is released mirroring the one featured in the Stephen King book our heroine is reading to pass the time! Writer/director Andrea Ricca truly delivers the ghoulish goods in this creature feature-style sinister short… a short that plays out without a single, solitary word of dialog no less! Because of said lack of dialog, the film’s only actor, the aforementioned Ferraro, has to do all of the heavy lifting with her expressions and body acting alone… and to that end she is a champ; creating a believable and sympathetic heroine we can root for over the films scant five minute and change runtime. As for the creature of the piece, it’s a rather cool looking humanoid terror that is realized with surprisingly good CG for a film of

Short Film Review: Dear Guest (2020)

Maria (The Last Exorcism‘s Ashley Bell) and Jules (Noureen DeWulf) are a couple checking in to a swanky vacation rental, so ol’ J-dawg can get her rest on. It doesn’t take but a fraction of a millipube (it’s a real measurement of time, but only us cool ass movie critics know about it… wait, now I’ve told you about it… ) for things to go from sedate to escape room style fight for survival, as AirBnB type sitches oft do, eh me boils n’ ghouls? Let me tell you cats n’ creeps; Dear Guest is one hell of a sinister short! Writer/director Megan Freels Johnston delivers a fantastic mystery; replete with cryptic clues delivered on lil’ white cards, a house that is impossible to escape, and a fine sense of escalating tension… all delivered as we scratch our horrible heads trying to figure out who is behind it all. Adding to the top tier acting (the cast is comprised entirely

Short Film Review: Can I Kill You (2018)

Rachel (Crisann Smith) is lookin’ forward to a lil’ girl time with her gal pal Tammy (Arlette Yousif), but R-dawgs other pal, Sandy (Tommie Vegas), has some other plans… Arriving on Rachel’s doorstep, bloodied and decidedly a bit “off”, Sandy spins a wild yarn about her eerie evening spent up to her armpits in the murder biz… biz that she willfully committed, and now she wants to turn her ghoulish gaze upon Rachel for further mayhem! Comprised of an all female cast, muted (almost ’70s style) color palette, and some great twists; Can I Kill You is a testament to what you can do in a single location, with limited budget and effects, as long as you are locked and loaded with a strong cast and script. Writer/director Nicholas Grant is not one to shy away from slasher flick tropes, or standing said tropes on their head, and this sinister short is all the better for it. Just when you

Following its premiere at the Monaco International Film Festival, a new teaser has arrived for Dear Guest, a Twilight Zone-esque short film. There are so many people that work behind-the-scenes to get a movie made and we rarely hear their side. During my interview with writer-director Marti King Young, she told me about the other jobs in Hollywood including on The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It and Annabelle Comes Home, as well as her recent projects and what her goals are as a filmmaker. What did your position as Location Coordinator for The Conjuring 3 involve? “Marti”: “That’s the first time I had ever worked in that regard, and I never got to go to set which really bugs me.
