Minstrel’s Bargain by Richard Ayre – Heart-pounding pulp horror!

Minstrel’s Bargain by Richard Ayre was a book I’d been wanting to read for quite a while. Richard has three books to his credit, the most notable of which to our readers here at Horror Fuel is Bad Neighborhood, the multi-author horror anthology I put together with the help of a Kickstarter campaign last year. With that said, going in I was only loosely familiar with the author’s work, and wasn’t quite sure of what to expect from something which promised to be “heart-pounding pulp horror”. In recent years, “pulp” has been a catch all term, and the book description didn’t give me much to go on. With that said, I know from personal experience reading and writing Richard’s work in the past that he’s an excellent writer, so I was optimistic despite the sparse description. Review: She Walks in Shadows

She Walks In Shadows edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia & Paula R. Stiles is very different from many of the books I’ve reviewed for Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force, before. It’s an anthology put out by an independent press which aspires to tell the stories of female authors whose works relate to or take place in the universe established by H.P. Lovecraft. Any horror fan worth their salt is familiar with Lovecraft’s work, so seeing the premise was enough to get me interested. The kind folks at Innsmouth Free Press were kind enough to send a copy of the book my way to review, and I am eager to share my thoughts with all of you. Spectre Show by Shaun Avery & David Broughton

Spectre Show #1 is an interesting independent comic that I found out about when speaking with the comic’s writer, Shaun Avery about the horror anthology project I’m currently working on. The description of the comic provided on the Comicsy website, when combined with the cover, piqued my interest. Fortunately, he and artist/letterist/cover artist David Broughton sent me a digital copy to review and share with you, and I’m back with the results! Comic Description: SPECTRE SHOW #1. Remember where you were the day the gates to the afterlife collapsed? The day humanity discovered that the spirits of the dead could possess their bodies at will, and that those spirits were very, very angry? No? Love and Decay Vol 1, Season 1 by Rachel Higginson

Love and Decay Volume #1 (Episodes 1-6 of the first season) by Rachel Higginson is a book I have been meaning to read for a while. It was recommended to me months ago by a reader during Women in Horror month and I’m just now getting the chance to circle back around to it. As of this post, the book is available for free on Kindle. (I seem to plug kindle a lot, but it’s what I use and I love the fact that I can read books online or on my cell phone with the FREE Kindle Reading App. If you like another medium feel free to recommend it in the comments or to me on Twitter!) THEM Episode 1 of Season 1 by M.D. Massey is a self described “paranormal post-apocalyptic thrill ride”. As with Champagne Jackson Kicks Zombie Ass, THEM immediately had some large shoes to fill by virtue of its tagline and book description. Flesh Without Soul is the debut novel of author Pochassic. The book is different than many of the books I’ve reviewed here on ZADF because unlike many in our beloved sub-genre of zombie fiction, this novel is complete. It doesn’t attempt to jump start a series, it’s a stand alone story which is incredibly unique. Book Description: What would you do to save the world? Eliminate racism? End Religious intolerance? Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs

This week I’m changing it up for the zombie comic or book review and am featuring a comedic parody book. Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs by Michael P. Spradlin and Illustrated by Jeff Weigel is an incredibly entertaining read and was a nice break from the depressing tales of the zombie-ridden wastelands that typically grace the would be shelves of ZADF. The premise of the book, according to the Author’s note, is that even zombies need love songs… Or rather, those left when the zombies strike, do. (If you’ve been watching the CW’s new series iZombie based on the comic of the same name, that would certainly seem to be true.) The basic idea is that sometime in your past with the love of your life (who is in all likelihood about to turn into zombie chow), you shared a favorite love song. Odium by Claire C. Riley

Odium (Dead Saga Book 1) by Claire C. Riley is a book I’ve had on my ‘to read’ radar for a while. I was intrigued by the idea that Riley polled Facebook users in order to use them in her book. As far as indie authors go, especially those who write zombies or horror fiction, she had a decent pool to choose from with over 3,000 Facebook fans at her disposal. (A feat for small scale publishing, to be sure.) Her website claims that she intends to bring a modern spin to classic horror. The site also named Romero as one of her influences, so I was optimistic to say the least. Description: It’s better to die by the gun than die by the dead. Planet Urth (Book 1) by Jennifer & Christopher Martrucci

Planet Urth (Book 1) by Jennifer & Christopher Martucci is different than the majority of the zombie fiction I have reviewed on Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force because it isn’t actually intended to be zombie fiction, but it still is a very interesting, relevant read for zombie fans. The world has changed. It’s dangerous, deadly. Inhuman creatures rule the planet. Animals have mutated. The land is hostile. But it’s all I’ve ever known. Hunger. Fear. Panic.
