In ‘Dracula Untold’ we see a new side of the Dracula legend that ties in the history of the real Vlad “The Impaler”. The movie delves into the beginning of Dracula’s story, when he was a man trying to protect his family and people against the Turks that he knows will invade. He refuses to meet their demands of one thousand boys as tribute for their army, when at the last moment of the meeting Mehmed also demands Vlad’s son to take to raise. Vlad has lived a peaceful life for ten years but the legendary fighter will never allow the Turks to take the boys or his son. Vlad must make a choice between losing it all or becoming a monster.
Luke Evans (Immortals) stars as Vlad/Dracula. Evans is a good fit for the role of immortal badass. The role of Vlad’s wife Mirena is played by the beautiful Sarah Gadon (Enemy). Art Parkinson does a great job as Ingeras, Vlad and Mirena’s young son and as the movie’s narrator. Dominic Cooper plays Mehmed, Vlad’s one time friend turned enemy.
Writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless did a nice job on the scripts. This action packed horror was directed by Gary Shore.
Much to my surprise, ‘Dracula Untold’ didn’t suck (*chuckles). The movie had a good story and some really cool effects. The brutal action sequences were well timed and the fighting well choreographed, though much of the battle scenes were hidden behind massive swirling colonies of bats. The movie other wise looked good, the filming locations were ideal for a movie set in the late 1400’s. Over all, it wasn’t a bad movie. I do wish that they would have had a little more actions and a few less bats.
If you are a vampire fan you will probably enjoy ‘Dracula Untold’. It’s out on DVD and VOD, as well as most movie rental sites.
