So here we are, my Little Monsters, just a little over two not short enough months away from Ridley Scott’s newest Alien franchise installment, Alien: Covenant. This film furthers the story-line that began with Scott’s 2012 film Prometheus.
It was originally intended that Prometheus would in effect act as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 film, Alien. but as most fans will attest, while the film answered many questions it asked a hell of a lot more that now need to be answered – enter Alien: Covenant.
Now Scott gets the chance to begin tying up loose ends left to unravel by the previous screenwriters on Prometheus. From the trailers that have been released thus far it looks like Scott is bringing back the essence of his 1979 classic. In an interview with the Sidney Morning Herald, Michael Fassbender stated, “They’ve gone back to the Alien mood in terms of the thriller-horror aspect of it but we have the scale of Prometheus still at play.”
But audiences are fickle and there are no guarantees for success, so there are also never any guarantees for a sequel. Now let me ask you this. Do you think that a filmmaker like Ridley Scott is going to stand idly by while waiting for the critical reviews of his work? The answer – HELL NO.
It looks like Scott has already been working on another installment, which would turn this new series of Alien franchise films into his own little prequel trilogy…or perhaps even more. Scott believes that at this point that it would do the franchise a disservice to allow the story to stagnate for two or more years before returning to the screen should it prove to be successful. Scott was quoted in the Herald’s article as saying, “You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you’d better be ready. You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year.”
So, my Little monsters, here’s to hoping that when Alien: Covenant opens on May 19th, it’s as good as we all hoped it would be. Especially so we can see what kind of horrifying thrill ride Ridley will have waiting for us in the next installment.
