We reported back last February that Todd McFarlane had completed the script for the new Spawn movie, a reboot of the 1997 movie, based on the dark comic that he created by the same name. It’s been a while since we heard an update, until now.
Fortunately, McFarlane gave a new update recently during the Emerald City Comic Con via a video during a panel. He stated that Spawn is still alive, despite rumors.
Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R…If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be nasty.”
This past September, McFarlane had this to say about the film:
I’d put it more into horror/suspense/supernatural genre,” He said. “In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn.” McFarlane continues o explain the character. “Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be a spectre, the ghost. He’s this thing that just whooshes in, this ghost that moves and will fuck you up if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the rest of the movie will look real, and be this real drama. He’s just this ghost, this thing behind it. Basically, I can make this version of the movie on a budget without crazy special effects. I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they’ll let me direct it.”
At the moment it is unknown what studio will snatch up the film, but with the success of all the superhero and antihero films that have been made lately like Deadpool, Logan, the Avengers, ect…, it would be a no-brainer. We will keep you posted as the new Spawn develops.
While I liked the original Spawn film, directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé (Frankenfish). The film did lack in decent CGI. Michael Jai White, Martin Sheen, John Leguizamo Theresa Randle, and Nicol Williamson starred.
There was also an animated series that aired from 1997 to 1999 that Todd McFarlane wrote 18 episodes of. The series had several extremely talented actors and actresses that voiceactors including Keith David, Richard Dysart, Dominique Jennings, James Keane and Michael McShane. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend that you do so.
