Screen Media has snagged the North American rights to the survival horror Black Water: Abyss ahead of Cannes and has set an August release.

The directing-producing team Andrew Traucki (The Reef) and Michael Robertson are behind the sequel to their 2007 film Black Water.

Based on a real-life crocodile attack, “Black Water: Abyss follows an adventure-loving couple who convince their friends to explore a remote cave system in the forests of Northern Australia. With a storm approaching, they abseil into the mouth of the cave, which starts to flood and find themselves threatened by a pack of apex predators – dangerous and hungry crocodiles. As danger mounts, long-kept secrets emerge and the friends turn on each other in a frantic fight for survival.

The sequel is said to have a similar feel as the original, which was shot with live crocodiles.

Jessica McNamee, Luke Mitchell, Amali Golden, Anthony J. Sharpe, and Benjamin Hoetjes star. Sarah Smith and Ian John Ridley penned the script.

We’re incredibly excited to have Screen Media on board this visceral journey of tension, suspense and teeth,” said Neal Kingston, partner alongside Michael Robertson in newly formed production company Thrills & Spills.

As a huge fan of the original film – and their other nerve-wracking creature films – I’m excited Screen Media can be part of the clever and well-executed thrill ride that is Black Water: Abyss,” said Seth Needle, SVP of Global Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Screen Media.

The deal was negotiated by Needle with Mike Runagall, Managing Director at Altitude Film Sales on behalf of the producers. Altitude is handling foreign sales and will be active on the title at the Cannes Virtual Market in June.

Black Water: Abyss will be released in limited theaters and on VOD platforms on August 7, 2020. The trailer should be released soon.
