Warner Bros. is set to release the complete first season of the amazing, intense series “The Outsider” on home video tomorrow.
Inspired by Stephen King’s best-selling novel, the ten-episode first season takes us on what law enforcement thinks is a straight forward investigation of the brutal murder of a young boy whose body is found in the Georgia woods. Police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) believes a local teacher, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the killer, after all that’s who the evidence points to. Or does it? What he doesn’t know it that a dark, ancient entity is at work.
Cynthia Erivo, Marie Winningham, Marc Menchaca, Julianne Nicholson, Paddy Considine, Yul Vazquez, also star, each playing their part to perfection with Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo giving standout performances.
Anderson is an officer that seems detached for everything around him due to the death of his son. He’s a skeptic of the supernatural world through and through, but he’s desperate to solve the murders. Anderson plays Ralph so well and makes him believable.
Erivo plays Holly, a unique woman who sees the world differently than your average person. She’s a finder. If you’re looking for someone she’s who you go to. She’s open to the possibilities that things, including the supernatural realm. The character seems about “off” but it’s part of her charm.
The way the story unfolds in this series is perfectly timed and incredibly well written and directed. The series has great balance when it comes to the pace. Things are kept interesting enough to keep you hooked but at the same time, the story is not rushed which I truly appreciate.
“The Outsider” is a combination of so many genres, crime, drama, action, mystery, and supernatural horror. Somehow they all work together.
The series tackles incredibly tough subjects such as loss, cruelty, hope, and murder but does so without going overboard and leaving you depressed or making you feel that it is trying too hard.
“The Outsider” is a series you can get wrapped up in and find yourself truly excited to watch the next episode.
The Blu-ray is filled with bonus features including the featurette “El Cucco, The Baby Yaga, The Outsider” which delves into the real-life mythology of the series’ villain, a supernatural being that feeds on children. It also explores the being’s powers as well as giving insights from the creators of the hit series and its cast.
For those of you who have never heard of the ancient legend of El Cucco, let me give you a brief description based on “The Outsider”. El Cucco is an entity that feeds on children. It has the power to steal the appearance of people and the cleverness to set them up for the murders it commits. Messed up, right?
The series is one of the best horror shows we’ve gotten in recent years. And I sincerely hope that we get a second season.
Be sure to snag a copy of the 5-skull series “The Outsider: The Complete First Season” on Blu-ray or DVD on July 28, 2020. You’ll be glad you did.
