IT: Chapter 2 actor James Ransone has been cast in Scott Derrickson‘s upcoming horror film The Black Phone, from Universal and Blumhouse. Ransone will star alongside his fellow Sinister franchise alum Ethan Hawke in the film whose plot and details are still being kept secret.

Derrickson and frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill (Bermuda, Doctor Strange, Sinister) adapted the script based on Joe Hill’s short story.

In Hill’s tale, first published in his short story collection 20th Century Ghosts, young John Finney has been kidnapped and locked in a basement, a place stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children. In his cell is an antique phone, long since disconnected…but it still rings at night, with calls from the dead.

Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum, for Blumhouse, are producing the film. Universal and Blumhouse will present the Crooked Highway production. Joe Hill is an executive producer.

Ransone has had an impressive career in both film and TV, starring in  Sinister, Sinister 2, Inside Man, the award-winning film Tangerine, and Oldboy, as well as series such as “Mosaic”, Hulu’s “The First”, “The Wire,” and “Generation Kill,” among others.

We’ll keep you posted as new details are revealed.
