Movie Review: Hail to the Deadites (2020)

Just to let you know where you stand with Hail to the Deadites, this film is made by Evil Dead fans for Evil Dead fans… so expect a particular level of diabolical deep-divin’ and outre obsession here boils n’ ghouls!
To wit: through the course of this here documentary we follow the exploits of individuals that are so deeply in love with Evil Dead that they create their nuptials around it, dress up as series hero Ash (Bruce Campbell… who appears in this flick throughout), and basically spend a fuckin’ fortune to scoop up any and all pieces of Evil Dead ephemera, including materials used in the films themselves!
The entire thing is, as you may surmise filled to the brim with nothin’ but a heapin’ helpin’ of heart; these folks are presented honestly and are incredibly open about the space the franchise occupies in their lives.
Also of note are the large number of celebrities from the films that are interviewed, and who seem all-in on these fiendish fans demonic devotions, even if they had less than zero clue that these films would occupy one of the largest slots in the horror hall o’ fame (and for the record, I think Ted Raimi’s piece was the cream of the creepy crop)!
I do have to mention a kinda/sorta negative that proved to be actually a genius-level choice once I thought about it. So dig this, while the film are being discussed, we don’t cut to clips from the Evil Dead series, rather we are treated to fan recreations. I at first thought that maybe this was because the filmmaker’s couldn’t get the rights, or were cheap as fuck… then it hit me; this is a film about the fans, so featuring their recreations was actually the perfect choice! I readily admit when I’m dumb as shit…
If you’re a fan of Evil Dead you’d buy this if I never wrote a single wicked word about it, but believe me when I, myself a pretty large Evil Dead slut, tell you that this is a really great putrid peek inside what makes those like us really tick!
