I think that we can agree, 2016’s Suicide Squad wasn’t great. So when the new movie hit HBO Max this weekend, I had my doubts about it. So what did I do? I watched it.

The film kicked off with a new squad headed to an island nation to take out a tower, but once they land on the beach, they discover that one of their squad has ratted them out and all hell breaks loose. What they don’t know is a second squad has landed on the island with the same mission, thankfully. As the team moves forward, they are sent to rescue Harley Quinn and Colonel Flagg after they are caught. While attempting to complete their mission of destroying the tower they discover a creature that’s out of this world as their loyalties are tested.

The cast is huge, but the most important characters include Bloodsport, a badass played by Idris Elba, who joins the squad so that his daughter is kept from going to jail. He is absolutely fantastic in the role. Margot Robbie does not disappoint in her reprisal of Harley Quinn. While she is a bad guy, she’s so damn likable. John Cena plays the role of hero-want-to-be Peacemaker, but in the end, the character shows his true colors as a monster. King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, comes across as a simpleton, he is brutal.  Ratcatcher, played by  Daniela Melchior, controls rats and I’m not even gonna lie, that really freaked me out (I’m terrified of rodents). Of course, Viola Davis is back as Amand Wallar, the cruel boss who controls the squads with an iron fist.

What separates The Suicide Squad from the first film is more action, more brutality, a better story, better dialogue, more character development, better effects, and the list goes on. It’s ten times better than its predecessor. Of course, the fact that James Gunn wrote and directed this one has a lot to do with it too. The man knows his action and special effects.

If you’re a fan of fighting and action, The Suicide Squad will be right up your alley. It is non-stop action, The body count is huge and there’s so much blood spilled, not that I’m complaining. There are some amazing kills in the movie including people being swallowed whole by King Shark, soldiers ripped in half, and there are explosions every time you turn around. The special effects team, wardrobe designers, and pyrotechnics team all deserve awards, as does the cast.

The Suicide Squad is a ton of fun. Between the witty dialogue and dark humor, you will find yourself laughing out loud as you cheer the squad on. We’ve finally gotten a movie that does the DC characters justice and then some.

My verdict? The Suicide Squad is a must-see! Luckily, you don’t have to wait long, it’s now in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
