When EA announced they were making a remake of Dead Space, I‘ll admit, I was not 100% on board with the idea, but EA was awesome enough to take me on a nostalgic horror trip back into deep space. So with all the hype being built around it, how does the remake fair? Let’s take a look at Dead Space.
For those not familiar with the story already, Dead Space follows an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who, along with others, is sent to the USG Ishimura, a large mining ship, after it sent out a distress signal. Soon afterward Clark and the crew discover that the ship is overrun with strange alien creatures.
Not onto the game itself! For returning Dead Space fans you should know that the controls are the same so muscle memory will take over as soon as you start! But for new fans, the controls are relatively simple to learn and there’s a tutorial option that will help out a lot. The sound design is really good, I suggest headphones to help add to the terror.
Many of you are probably wondering what’s different with the remake compared to the original, well, I’m not going to spoil the plot, but if you’re familiar with the game, it’s pretty much going to feel the same as for the most part the game mirrors the original BUT there are indeed new things added to the plot. the only change I’ll mention is the game is a lot darker (as in lighting) than the original which adds to the tension as you’ll have to use your flashlight in order to see. One big change that’s safe to mention is that Isaac talks while in the original he was the strong silent type and only started to talk in the sequels.
Overall, Dead Space was worth the hype from the start. The fact they rebuilt the game from the ground up mirroring the original was impressive along with adding new elements to the game’s story in a way that makes it feel like it’s a director’s cut. Both old and new players of Dead Space will be blown away by this version of the game as it stays true to the original while keeping it fresh and deserves to be checked out.
On my scale of 1-10, for great sound design, creatively new elements added to the story, scary upgrades to the lighting engine, keeping true to the original, and keeping the controls the same, Dead Space is a 10!
Dead Space is out now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
