Following is successful film festival run, Republic Pictures has now acquired North American rights to C2 Motion Picture Group’s horror film Azrael, for distribution by Paramount Global Distribution, in a high seven figure deal.
The high concept action-horror film stars Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) and was directed by E.L. Katz (Channel Zero, “Haunting of Bly Manor”) from an original script by Simon Barrett (The Guest, You’re Next, and the upcoming Godzilla Vs. Kong sequel).
“In a world in which no one speaks, a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman (Weaving) who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – yet she will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz.”
Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan’s C2 Motion Picture Group won the rights to the hot project in a competitive bidding situation last fall and fully financed and produced the film.
Producers are Dan Kagan (California King), Dave Caplan (Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) and Simon Barrett. Jason Cloth (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Katrin Kissa (Captain Volkogonov Escaped) are Executive Producers.
CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-represented domestic sales for film. Mossbank handles international sales.
The deal for Azrael is the second distribution deal struck between C2 Motion Picture Group and Republic Pictures. In May, during the Cannes Film Festival, Republic Pictures acquired North American rights to The End We Start From, for distribution by Paramount Global Content Distribution. The film, which drew rave reviews from its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) earlier this month, stars BAFTA and Emmy award-winning actor Jodie Comer and is directed by BAFTA award-winning director Mahalia Belo.
Cloth and Caplan’s C2 Motion Picture Group have co-financed four Paramount Pictures films in the last year – Babylon, Transformers: Rise of the Beats, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and, most recently, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.
Upcoming C2 Motion Picture Group films include the horror/thriller Longlegs starring Nicolas Cage, directed by Osgood Perkins; the comedy Goodrich starring Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis; and a new feature adaptation based on the Stephen King short story The Monkey, produced alongside James Wan and Peter Safran.
