What would happen if the world learned you had less than a year before a doom-delivering asteroid would destroy much of the Earth? That’s the premise of Netflix’s K-series “Good Bye Earth.”
The series is based on the gripping novel The Fool At the End of the World by renowned Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka. “Good Bye Earth” promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of societal collapse and the resilience of the human spirit. It explores a dystopian future where humanity grapples with the impending doom of a colossal asteroid hurtling toward Earth.
The series takes place in South Korea. The nation faces the devastating reality of being directly in the asteroid’s path. News of the impending collision sparks chaos. Martial law is declared, societal order crumbles, and the line between belief and denial blurs. Criminals exploit the pandemonium, charlatans exploit the vulnerable, and the desperate scramble for safety in increasingly scarce havens.
Amidst this bleak backdrop, we meet Sekyung (played by Ahn Eun-jin), a middle school teacher haunted by the tragic death of a student during a past protest. With only 300 days left until the predicted apocalypse, Sekyung and her fellow citizens refuse to surrender to despair. They fight for a semblance of normalcy, particularly for the sake of the younger generation’s future.
Author Isaka’s works have seen previous success in Hollywood adaptations, including the action-packed Brad Pitt film Bullet Train. Netflix further solidifies its commitment to Isaka’s captivating stories with a planned feature film adaptation of Seesaw Monster, starring A-listers Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek.
