A legendary figure is getting a modern makeover for television. CBS is developing a new procedural series centered around Abraham Van Helsing, the famed monster hunter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
This contemporary take on the character sees him working alongside his ex-lover, FBI Special Agent Mina Harker (another character from Dracula). Together, they’ll tackle the darkest, most horrifying crimes plaguing New York City. This reimagining retains the core concept of Van Helsing—an intellectual powerhouse dedicated to fighting evil—but places him in a modern crime-solving context.
The project boasts a team with a proven track record. Executive producer Rob Doherty, the mastermind behind CBS’s “Elementary,” brings his expertise to the table. Doherty is joined by executive producers Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. Writer Jonathan Lee, currently working on Netflix’s upcoming “Lockerbie” miniseries, is attached to pen the script.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Van Helsing first appeared in Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel “Dracula.” While the novel portrays him as a professor, many film and television adaptations have transformed him into a seasoned vampire hunter, a man of action. Actors like Edward Van Sloan, Peter Cushing, Anthony Hopkins, and Hugh Jackman have all brought Helsing to life on screen.
This isn’t Van Helsing’s first television rodeo. Syfy’s “Van Helsing,” which aired from 2016-2021, featured a descendant of Abraham battling vampires in a post-apocalyptic future. However, this new CBS series promises a fresh take, placing the original character into a contemporary crime-solving scenario.
With casting and a premiere date yet to be announced, the development of this new series will pique the interest of fans of classic horror and modern crime procedurals alike.
