After spending years trapped in development hell—mutating from a feature film concept into a canceled HBO series and back again—Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon, Her Private Hell) has officially cracked the case. The auteur has announced that his long-gestating Maniac Cop Reimagining is finally heading to production, with arthouse titan MUBI fully bankrolling the chaos.

The Dossier: A Radical Resurrection

For the uninitiated, William Lustig’s original 1988 cult classic followed a towering, seemingly undead officer (the legendary Robert Z’Dar) brutally murdering innocent civilians on the streets of New York. The original film famously starred B-movie royalty Bruce Campbell as a framed young cop and Tom Atkins as the cynical detective uncovering a massive blue wall of silence.

Refn isn’t looking to give the property a standard Hollywood coat of paint. He’s aiming for something much more volatile.

“In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of Maniac Cop alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction,” Refn stated. “I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem.”

MUBI’s Founder and CEO, Efe Cakarel, echoed the sentiment, promising that the film won’t just be a simple cash-in: “Maniac Cop in Nicolas’s hands is not a remake. It is a resurrection. Nicolas has one of the most dangerous imaginations in modern cinema.”

Production Briefing

MUBI is handling the heavy lifting, ensuring the film gets the premium theatrical rollout it deserves. Shooting begins January 2027 in Los Angeles (Casting announcements are forthcoming). Refn is producing under his NWR Originals banner alongside Christina Erritzøe and Kimberly Willming. Vincent Maraval is executive producing for GoodFellas, with Veterans managing international sales.

The Refn Renaissance

Expect Maniac Cop to crash into theaters sometime later in 2027.

Fortunately, you won’t have to wait until next year to get your fix of Refn’s stylized, hyper-violent storytelling. The director has been prolific lately. His highly anticipated thriller Her Private Hell just dropped its explosive first trailer and is locked and loaded to hit theaters soon.

Watch the original Maniac Cop trailer below while you wait. If you somehow missed the gory gem starring a young Bruce Campbell, you can stream it on Prime Video, AMC+, and Shudder.

Lock your doors, stay off the streets, and remember: the police aren’t always here to protect you.
