Storm King Comics Hits Book #50 with a Superpowered Retelling of ‘Red Riding’
If you’ve been following indie comic royalty, you know that Storm King Comics doesn’t do subtle. The powerhouse publishing house—founded by legendary producer Sandy King—has officially hit a massive milestone.
The imprint is dropping its 50th full-length graphic novel, Red Riding: Rise of the Alpha Huntress. The landmark book is available for pre-order right now and is locked and loaded for a release on June 9, 2026.
Grandma’s House Just Got a Whole Lot Deadlier
Written by LGBTQ+ author Neo Edmund and brought to life by legendary illustrator Jan Duursema, the graphic novel marks the studio’s first novel adaptation. It takes the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale; however, it strips away the innocence and injects it with pure, unadulterated cosmic horror.
The story follows 17-year-old Red Riding, who rushes back home to Wayward Woods after receiving an ominous letter. Instead of just baking cookies, Red reconnects with her grandmother and long-lost friends, only to discover ancient lunar spirits have gifted her incredible superpowers.
Naturally, she does what any proactive teenager would do: she steps up to become the “Alpha Huntress” and starts tracking down the monsters lurking in the trees.
Storm King founder Sandy King couldn’t be prouder of the studio’s evolution:
“Wow, we’ve hit another landmark at Storm King Comics… As lifelong fans of classic monsters in literature, we’re excited to be releasing our first adaptation of a novel… Onward to the next fifty! Thanks for being with us since number one.”
A Trophy Room Fit for Horror Royalty
The 50-book milestone isn’t the only thing Sandy King is celebrating this season. The publisher is currently riding a massive wave of industry recognition, including:
-A Bram Stoker Award Nomination: Sandy King is up for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel for her work on Tales for a Halloween Night Vol. 11.
-An Eisner Award Nomination: Industry legend Janice Chiang has snagged a 2026 nomination for her stellar lettering on Blood of the Taken: Next of Kin and Tales of Science Fiction: Pause.
The Summer of Blood: What’s Coming Next
Storm King isn’t resting on its laurels after book fifty. They have already mapped out a terrifying summer slate to keep your nightmares fresh:
To make the CATHEDRAL launch even sweeter for audiophiles, the book comes with a companion album by Carpenter via Sacred Bones Records on August 9. Fans can already catch a sneak peek of the book’s atmospheric dread by streaming the visualizer for the new track, “Lord Of The Underground,” right now.
The Masters Behind the Madness
For the uninitiated, Storm King Comics was formed in 2013, making Sandy King the first woman ever to found a comic book publishing company. Alongside her husband—iconic filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, They Live)—King has spent over a decade recruiting the absolute best writers and artists from across movies, novels, and comics to deliver elite sci-fi and horror entertainment.
With fifty full-length graphic novels in the rearview mirror, a stack of awards on the mantle, and John Carpenter finally making his comic-writing debut this August, Storm King is proving that the golden age of independent horror comics is happening right now.
