If you thought the Evil Dead franchise couldn’t get any more delightfully chaotic, think again. While we are all eagerly awaiting director Sébastien Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn to hit theaters, the universe is already treating us to a second helping of Deadite mayhem—and this one is packing a vintage punch.
Not a Sequel
Evil Dead Wrath has officially wrapped production, with The Last Stop in Yuma County director Francis Galluppi steering the ship for a theatrical release on April 7, 2028. Up until now, details on the project have been locked tighter than the Necronomicon. In a recent interview with franchise producer Rob Tapert (uncovered by the folks at Dread Central), a massive bombshell was dropped. The entire film takes place in 1972.
Yes, you read that right. Evil Dead Wrath is a prequel to the entire franchise, taking place nearly a decade before Ash Williams and his ill-fated friends ever set foot in that infamous cabin in the woods. Army of Darkness flung Ash back to the Middle Ages. But Wrath will officially mark the earliest chronological point in the universe’s modern era. And it promises a whole new flavor of terror.
According to Tapert
Tapert spilled the details during a chat with students at Michigan State University. The film won’t just be set in the seventies. It’s going to look like it was dragged straight out of them.
“It will feel like a 1972 movie because the director and his DP want to imitate the film’s look and feel of something that’s called Ektachrome 100,” Tapert revealed.
A Killer Cast
The cast is equally stacked with genre royalty ready to face the woods. The film stars Charlotte Hope (The Nun), Jessica McNamee (Mortal Kombat), Zach Gilford (Midnight Mass), and Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road). They are joined by Ella Newton, Elizabeth Cullen, and Ella Oliphant. Naturally, horror royalty Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing, with Bruce Campbell and Lee Cronin serving as executive producers.
Franchise creators Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are on board to produce the project. At the same time, horror icons Bruce Campbell and Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) will serve as executive producers. Romel Adam and Jose Canas join them.
Grab your disco records and get ready, because the old-school Necronomicon rules are back, and 1972 is about to get incredibly bloody.
