The Rating
Fresh off its trailer drop at San Diego Comic-Con, the movie has officially secured its PG-13 rating for “language, some violent content, and suggestive material.” Best of all, the wait is almost over, as the killer tomatoes are squishing their way into select U.S. theaters this August.
A Juicy Story
This brand-new chapter pits cutting-edge Tech-Bro hubris against the terrifying power of mutated agriculture. The story follows a young biotech prodigy who develops a revolutionary, genetically engineered super-vegetable designed to solve humanity’s global crises. Naturally, because this is a Killer Tomatoes movie, the experiment spirals spectacularly out of control, spawning a hyper-intelligent, bloodthirsty crop of killer fruit hellbent on human eradication.
Originals Return
To ensure the series’ signature offbeat, low-brow camp humor remains, the screenplay was penned by original franchise co-creators Costa Dillon and J. Stephen Peace. David Ferino is stepping into the director’s chair.
In true, glorious B-movie fashion, the ensemble features an incredible mix of franchise royalty, comedy veterans, and genre favorites. John Astin reprises his legendary role as the unhinged mad scientist Professor Gangreen, while David Koechner steps up as the U.S. President’s overmatched Press Secretary. The cast is rounded out by Eric Roberts, Catherine Corcoran, Dan Bakkedahl, Myrna Velasco, Vernée Watson, and Paul Bates.
The History of Tomatoes
For those keeping track of the produce timeline at home, Organic Intelligence marks the first feature entry since the ’90s. The legacy spans the 1978 original cult-classic and 1988’s Return of the Killer Tomatoes. Then there was 1991’s Killer Tomatoes Strike Back!, and 1992’s Killer Tomatoes Eat France! Let’s not forget the beloved 1990 animated TV series.
