A Documentary Assignment Gone Horribly Wrong
The nightmare centers around Shelly. She’s a young woman whose daily life is consumed by the debilitating agony of chronic sleep paralysis and horrifying night terrors. In a desperate bid for answers and relief, her public cries for help attract two college students looking for the ultimate subject for their academic film project. However, what starts as a routine documentary recording her restless nights rapidly devolves into something far more sinister. As the cameras roll, they capture terrifying occurrences that go way beyond simple medical anomalies.
Deeply Personal Inspirations Behind the Lenses
For writer-director Joshua Brucker, the project is a love letter to the horror movies that shaped his upbringing. Brucker channeled his childhood feelings of detachment and lingering dread into the atmosphere of Night Terror. The film draws direct inspiration from genre-defining classics like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. But Brucker aimed to merge personal vulnerability with intense suspense. “I’ve always considered myself a connoisseur of found-footage horror films, a passion that began in childhood
when I first rented The Blair Witch Project with my family. While I didn’t spend much time in the woods
growing up, I was raised on a very isolated farm, and that sense of detachment from the rest of the world
always unsettled me.Night Terror draws heavily from those early experiences, capturing the isolation I felt as a youngster and
channeling some of my deepest fears. I was also in college when the first Paranormal Activity film was
released, and it was then that I realized I wanted to pursue a career in film. In many ways, Night Terror brings
together these two formative moments in my life. Without giving too much away, I believe the film takes a
compelling turn in the third act, one that will leave audiences genuinely shocked.”
