Christopher Nolan is back with a mythic action epic, The Odyssey. The film uses brand-new IMAX® technology to capture Homer’s foundational saga. This marks the first time this legendary story will grace giant IMAX® screens.
An Unrivaled Ensemble Cast
The cast list reads like a Hollywood “Who’s Who”. Matt Damon leads the film as the weary Odysseus. Anne Hathaway plays his loyal wife, Penelope. Tom Holland stars as their son, Telemachus. Charlize Theron appears as the nymph Calypso. Robert Pattinson plays the sniveling suitor Antinous. And Zendaya portrays the wise goddess Athena.
The film also features Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Benny Safdie. Mia Goth and Himesh Patel round out this massive, powerhouse ensemble.
A New Trailer
The latest trailer has arrived, and it’s absolutely stunning. It opens with Matt Damon saying goodbye to his wife (Hathaway) before cutting to a sailing ship, battles, a cyclops, and Odysseus’ son (Holland), who has never given up hope of his father returning. Odysseus’ journey will not be easy, but he still has plenty of fight left in him and determination to return to his family’s arms.
Behind the Film
Nolan shot the entire film using IMAX cameras for maximum scale. The battle scenes in the trailer look absolutely incredible and awe-inspiring.
Emma Thomas and Nolan produced the film for their company, Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip serves as the executive producer for this Universal Pictures release.
The History of the Odyssey
The Odyssey is one of the two foundational pillars of Western literature, traditionally attributed to the blind poet Homer around the 8th century BCE. While the Iliad focuses on the rage of Achilles and the Trojan War, the Odyssey is a story of “ostos”(homecoming), following the hero Odysseus on his ten-year struggle to return to Ithaca. Though composed in the 8th century, the poem is set during the Bronze Age (roughly 1200 BCE).
