If you’ve been sitting around wondering when Halloween Horror Nights would finally tear your soul apart, today is your lucky day. Universal Studios has officially announced that, for the first time ever, Hellraiser is coming to the event. A terror-inducing haunted house based on the legendary original film trilogy will debut this fall at both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood.

It turns out we can have nice things—they just happen to come with chains and Cenobites.

Puzzle Boxes and Pinhead: A Brief History of Pain

For the uninitiated, Hellraiser has been traumatizing audiences since Clive Barker first opened the Lemarchand Configuration puzzle box in his 1987 directorial debut. Stripping away the standard slasher tropes of the ’80s, the franchise introduced us to a realm of sadomasochistic terror ruled by the iconic Pinhead.

While the movie franchise eventually spawned over a dozen sequels—sending the Cenobites everywhere from judgment-free cyberspace to actual outer space—HHN is wisely throwing it back to the golden era. By focusing on the original trilogy (Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, and Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth), Universal is leaning heavily into the classic, skin-crawling surrealism that made the franchise a horror staple.

The Evolution of the Event

Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights started back in 1991 as a modest, three-night event in Orlando called “Fright Nights.” Fast forward a few decades, and it has evolved into a bicoastal, multi-week juggernaut of terror.

HHN has a legendary track record of bringing cinematic royalty to life—from Michael Myers to Stranger Things. Yet, despite decades of fan petitions and wishlists, the Hellraiser puzzle box remained unsolved. Until now. Bringing Pinhead into the mix marks a major milestone for the event, offering a masterclass in psychological dread and gory special effects that will fit perfectly into the parks’ legendary lineup.
