Just when you thought summer movies had exhausted every possible way to make you terrified of open water, The Devil’s Mouth is here to prove that staying inside a dark, flooding cave isn’t much safer.
Ahead of its streaming debut this Wednesday, July 29, Prime Video has dropped new clips. The fresh footage teases a pitch-black, suffocating fight for survival where oxygen is low, and the local marine life has zero hospitality.
A Cave Dive from Hell
The survival thriller follows five young friends setting off on one last sun-drenched adventure along Thailand’s coast. Their grand finale? A guided swim through a sprawling, labyrinthine cave system known ominously as The Devil’s Mouth.
Unsurprisingly, the excursion goes south fast.
A freak storm from the previous week completely flooded the underground waterways with seawater. Most of the displaced sea life didn’t survive the sudden environment swap. However, one massive, hyper-aggressive predator adapted just fine. Trapped in pitch-black, narrow, submerged tunnels with a silent killer on their tail, the group’s sense of direction evaporates. Panic swiftly turns friend against friend in a savage race for air.
Young Hollywood vs. The Deep
The Devil’s Mouth stacks its cave with a recognizable lineup of rising YA stars, including Scream Queen Kathryn Newton (Ready or Not 2), Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), and Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty). Rounding out the aquatic target practice are Nico Hiraga (Booksmart), Tommi Rose, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
High-Concept Lineage and Sinking Scores
Behind the lens is director Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Imaginary), who knows a thing or two about putting young casts through high-concept meat grinders.
The project itself boasts impressive pedigree: it originally made waves on the Black List under the title Apex—penned by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew)—before Wadlow stepped in to polish the screenplay. Adding even more weight to the underwater dread is an atmospheric, booming score by legendary composer Bear McCreary (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Walking Dead).
