Acclaimed Godzilla Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki is preparing his English-language feature directorial debut, the sci-fi project Grandgear. Sony Pictures and Bad Robot scheduled the theatrical release for February 18, 2028.
Yamazaki wrote the original screenplay and will direct the high-concept production. Furthermore, “30 Coins” star Paul Giamatti (pictured) is in active talks to join the cast. Rising actors Nico Parker and Sam Nivola have already officially joined the exciting project, Deadline reports.
High-Octane Mecha Plot Details
Exact storyline details remain under wraps during early development. However, studio executives showcased a thrilling teaser trailer at CinemaCon earlier this year. The exclusive footage showed two colossal mechanical robots fighting destructively in a city. As a result, fans expect a massive sci-fi spectacle that leans heavily on Yamazaki’s signature visual effects. Bad Robot producer J.J. Abrams is producing the feature alongside Glen Zipper. Principal photography will officially begin in 2027, with casting still underway.
Landmark Career Accomplishments
Yamazaki achieved historic international success with his blockbuster creature feature Godzilla Minus One. He wrote, directed, and personally supervised the film’s visual effects team. Subsequently, he became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. That victory cemented his reputation as one of today’s most visionary directors.
Highly Anticipated Sequel Arrival
In addition to developing his new English project, Yamazaki remains extremely busy with existing monster franchises. The talented director recently wrapped production on his highly anticipated Japanese sequel titled Godzilla Minus Zero. That direct follow-up arrives in movie theaters nationwide next week to continue the epic story. Fans can look forward to seeing more production details for Grandgear as filming approaches next year.
