Darren Lynn Bousman is returning to direct a new thriller film. The famous Saw filmmaker is branching out from horror to helm the thriller Serpentine for Dream State Studios, Deadline reports.
A Quiet Town Collides
The story takes place in a small New England town. However, deep secrets quickly surface in this quiet community. Organized crime and corrupt police officers soon overlap. Meanwhile, competitive figure skaters become caught in the conflict.
A desperate woman tries to leave her dark past behind. Unfortunately, her plan for a clean escape creates severe consequences. She hopes to disappear completely from her old life. Instead, local criminals drag her into a dangerous web. Powerful figures work hard to keep their secrets hidden.
A Fresh Creative Direction
Bousman wants to test his creative limits beyond standard horror. However, he will still include intense suspense and psychological dread. The story features a darkly funny atmosphere similar to Fargo. Therefore, this unique blend of tone excited the director. Bousman explained his choice.
“I’ve wanted for a long time to flex some different muscles outside of the horror genre, and Serpentine gives me that opportunity without completely abandoning the things I love. There’s still dread, fear and a real sense of intensity running through it, but it exists in this strange, darkly funny, Fargo-esque world that feels very different from anything I’ve directed before. That combination is what really excites me.”
A Strong Collaborative Vision
The film’s writer, Valerie Palencar, praised the director’s choice. Moreover, she believes Bousman understands these complex characters deeply. He excels at building high tension without losing human emotion. As a result, the production team is excited to begin filming.
“Darren immediately understood what makes Serpentine unusual. This is a story driven by complex characters operating in a world where ambition and loyalty are constantly being tested. Darren has an extraordinary ability to create tension while never losing sight of character, and we are enormously excited to have him directing the film.”
