Breakout horror filmmaker Curry Barker surprised genre fans with a new short film titled Mama Bear. The five-minute short premiered on his popular YouTube channel, “That’s a Bad Idea.” The Microsoft-sponsored project gives fans a quick horror fix while they wait for his next feature.

The story centers on a young house cleaner named Floyd whose afternoon nap is suddenly interrupted. Disturbing phone calls and creepy doppelgängers quickly derail his day into an unsettling nightmare. Jon Lee Richardson stars as Floyd alongside Katie Sarife, Ericka Kreuz, and Joshua Snyder. Barker wrote, directed, and edited the project himself.

A Meteoric Rise in Genre Cinema

Barker continues an incredible breakout run after the massive global success of Obsession. Focus Features acquired the horror hit at the Toronto International Film Festival before it grossed over $500 million worldwide. As a result, major Hollywood studios quickly lined up to secure the director’s future projects.

Upcoming slate highlights include a high-profile Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot with studio A24. Additionally, Universal secured an eight-figure deal for a mysterious original horror feature. Barker remains one of the most sought-after creative minds working in genre cinema today.

High Anticipation for Anything But Ghosts

Barker’s next film, Anything But Ghosts, already has fans excited. Focus Features and Blumhouse are partnering to handle the supernatural comedy’s theatrical release. Barker also co-wrote, directed, and stars alongside longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson, who joined me for an interview for Obsession.

The star-studded cast features Hollywood leads Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. The story follows two shameless con artist ghost hunters who fake hauntings for gullible clients using rigged tables and flickering lights. However, their lucrative grift goes horribly wrong when they cross paths with a genuine, dangerous entity. Fans can experience the supernatural feature in theaters in May 2027.
