Horror fans are receiving the ultimate dark fantasy news today. Specifically, 20th Century Studios is officially moving forward with Jennifer’s Body 2. We’ve got more good news. The original powerhouse creative dream team is fully reuniting for this blood-soaked project. Director Karyn Kusama, who confirmed the news in October, returns to helm the feature alongside Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody.
When we last reported on the sequel in October, we knew Megan Fox was back, but it was unknown whether Amanda Seyfried would return as Needy. Today, we have good news: she is.
Megan Fox will reprise her iconic role as the succubus cheerleader. Seyfried is officially confirmed to return as her best friend Needy. This major casting confirmation completes the legendary core ensemble. And get this, the highly anticipated script is already finished and ready for production.
Reclaiming a Misunderstood Masterpiece
Originally, the 2009 film suffered from a ridiculously misguided studio marketing campaign. Regrettably, teenage boys were targeted instead of the actual intended female audience. As a result, mainstream audiences initially dismissed this brilliant feminist horror comedy. However, genre fans and women passionately reclaimed the film over the following decade. Today, it stands proudly as a widely celebrated, timeless cult classic. Now, the original creators can finally expand their beloved toxic-friendship saga.
Loneliness and Vulnerability in the Script
Meanwhile, Diablo Cody recently shared exciting details about her finished screenplay. Specifically, the new story explores a far more sympathetic angle for Jennifer. Cody teases that the sequel will highlight Jennifer’s underlying isolation, insecurity, and deep emotional vulnerability. Jennifer was fundamentally a victim both before and after her demonic ritual. Therefore, the sequel promises to dig much deeper into her tragic personal story. Nevertheless, fans can still expect plenty of lethal, blood-drenched carnage throughout. Unquestionably, the razor-sharp dialogue and dark humor will remain fully intact.
Recalibrating the Demonic Showdown
The original story left off after an extremely violent best-friend confrontation. An indie rock band initially sacrificed Jennifer to Satan for a record deal. Consequently, a bloodthirsty demon possessed her, demanding male flesh for strength. Suddenly, Needy had to battle her killer best friend to end the local bloodshed. Now, this upcoming sequel will navigate the messy aftermath of their complex bond. Fortunately, audiences can expect the same shameless succubus energy and iconic style.
The original film is currently streaming on Hulu, Peacock, and Starz if you want to watch or rewatch it. The original trailer offers a quick refresher on the iconic demonic carnage.
