Mike Flanagan’s Adaptation Of King’s ‘Doctor Sleep’ Enters Development

Stephen King’s adaptations have been everywhere over the past few years, not that we are complaining. That trend shows no sign of ending anytime soon. In fact, Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of King’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep has now officially entered development. Flanagan will be directing from the script he penned with Akiva Goldsman.
Flanagan is responsible for last year’s fantastic Netflix movie adaptation of King’s Gerald’s Game, along with films like Oculus, Hush, Before I wake, and Ouija: Origins of Evil.
In Doctor Sleep, Danny Torrance carries the trauma he experienced at the Overlook Hotel into his adult life. He has become a reflection of his father, with a lingering rage bubbling under the surface. Drinking numbs his pain and his “shine”, but his powers return when he chooses sobriety and begins using his gift to help those dying at a hospice. He forms a psychic connection with a young girl who also has abilities, and who has become the target of a scary group of people with abilities of their own. The group has discovered that they can enhance their powers when they inhale a “steam” that comes from those with ‘shine” when they are suffering.
