Three friends arrive at the house in Thailand that they are renting for the summer, to find a life-size gold statue of a young girl siting in the middle of the room. On the ladies’ second day they head to town to pick up supplies and end up picking up three British men. After having one last drink the girls seem to pass out. In the morning all three wake-up from intense nightmares during which they butchered the men, but they see no signs of blood, there is another problem, the statue is missing. Each day that goes by things are getting stranger and bloodier for the women. After talking to a witch, they realize that the gold statue is not just a statue, it’s the body of a little girl, murdered and covered in gold and she is possessing them at night making them murder. As the movie unfolds we learn of the horrible fate of the child and her family, along with the fate of new victims, at the hands of the child’s angry spirit.
The ladies that make this exotic paranormal movie so enjoyable are Emily O’Brien (The Young and the Restless), Ciara Hanna (Blood Lake) and ‘Army of the Dead’ actress Jackie Moore. They all played their roles perfectly, they also played possessed very well. Writer, director James Cullen Bressack is behind the paranormal thriller. Bressack has also been tied to projects such as ‘Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys’ (2014) and this year’s ‘Virus of the Dead’. Bressack did a great job of creating a truly enjoyable horror movie, with just the right balance of blood, gore and intrigue. The story line of ‘Pernicious’ was very well written and directed. The effects, by Jerami Cruise and Anthony Julio, were nicely balanced between practical effects, and CGI. I can’t think of one reason not to like ‘Pernicious. If you are wondering if you should watch this movie, the answer is yes.
‘Pernicious’ will be in select theaters an on VOD on June 19th. For updates follow the official ‘Pernicious’ FaceBook page and on Twitter .
