“Game of Thrones” fans were left disappointed with its final season but found hope when the prequel series “House of the Dragon” was announced. Sadly, HBO has now officially canceled the prequel, ComingSoon.net reports.
According to a new book, titled Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, from former Warner Media chairman Bob Greenblatt, the series was canceled by the studio after already having spent a whopping $30 million on the project.
“They had spent over $30 million on a Game of Thrones prequel pilot that was in production when I got there,” Greenblatt states in the book. “And when I saw a cut of it in a few months after I arrived, I said to Casey, ‘This just doesn’t work, and I don’t think it delivers on the promise of the original series.’ And he didn’t disagree, which actually was a relief. We unfortunately decided to pull the plug on it, there was enormous pressure to get it right and I don’t think that would have worked.”
Naomi Watts had been cast in a leading role in the series that was set hundreds of years prior to the original “Game of Thrones” series and was an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood.”
While some fans will be disappointed, you have to give respect to HBO for putting quality first. The last thing “Game of Thrones” fans want is to be let down again.
