Odds are, by now you’ve watched the heartbreaking season four finale of “Stranger Things.” And you probably have questions. Co-creator Matt Duffer has supplied a few answers.

Speaking of the season that will follow the big cliffhanger he had this to say:

“Characters are already going to be in action, they’re already going to have a goal and a drive, and I think that’s going to carve out at least a couple hours and make this season feel really different. I’m sure the wrap-up will be a lot longer, it’s going to be [The Lord of the Rings:] Return of the King-ish with, like, eight endings.”

After the final moments of the finale (don’t worry, I won’t spoil it) it’s obvious that the group and the town are in serious danger. Matt Duffer has confirmed we’re going back to Hawkins and the formula from the first season.

“We wanna go back to a lot of the things we did in Season 1,” Duffer told EW. “A lot of the original groupings and pairings that we had in Season 1 – there’s something nice about coming full circle.”

This season we had long episodes with the finale lasting over two hours, but that won’t be the case in season 5.

“The only reason we don’t expect it to be as long is because if you look at it, it’s almost a two-hour ramp-up before our kids really get drawn into the supernatural mystery,” Duffer said. “You get to know them, you get to see them in their lives, what they’re struggling with, adapting to high school, and so forth. Steve’s trying to find a date, all of that. None of that obviously is going to be occurring in the first two episodes of [Season 5].” Duffer told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Fans are all asking when will the series return? According to star David Harbour, it would be a miracle if season five premieres before 2024 (I know it sucks). The other bad news is that the Duffer brothers have confirmed it will be the final season.

“I think we’ll [shoot] next year,” Harbour told GQ. They’re finishing writing it this year, and they need to prep and stuff, so hopefully it’ll be this year. But I think that’s the plan. So it’d probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record.”

In the finale the kids finally faced off against Vecna, unfortunately, he got away. Now, Hawkins is left in ruins, Sadie is in a coma, and fan-favorite Eddie gave his life to help the group. We can expect to learn more about Sadie’s situation, see the kids take on Vecna again, this time together, and we’ll see Vecna unleash the creature from his drawing. Hopefully, next season Eleven and the group can find a way to save the world.

We will keep you posted as we learn more.
