Game Review: ‘The Invincible’

Stanisław Lem’s novel The Invincible explores humanity’s relationship with life on other planets and how the evolution of life on Earth does not mean it’s superior. Starward Industries and 11 Bit Studio have brought Lem’s work to life in the appropriately named game adaptation, The Invincible. The Invincible follows astrobiologist Yasna, who is struggling to regain her memories while at the same time trying to figure out what happened to her crewmates on the planet of Regis III and the mystery behind these strange organic metal structures the crew was investigating. The controls for The Invincible are thankfully not complicated as the game keeps prompting you of what button does what. The soundtrack and sound design are stellar! The soundtrack catches the retro sci-fi mood with a modern twist. The thing I love about The Invincible is the art. The atompunk look of the equipment and tools, and the interior of the ship and vehicles. When it comes to the

Acclaimed Actors Join Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King Adaptation ‘Life Of Chuck’

There are two names in horror that make a perfect combination: Stephen King and Mike Flanagan. Flanagan, who has already adapted the King tales Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, is back with a new film based on a King story. The Life of Chuck by King was featured in his If It Bleeds. The project has begun to announce its killer cast, featuring Tom Hiddleston. As always, you can expect Flanagan regulars to return alongside new cast members. Mark Hamill, who also starred in his new fantastic series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is set to star alongside Karen Gillan, who starred in Flanagan’s breakout film Oculus. Jacob Tremblay, who appeared in Doctor Sleep, returns for the new project. Flanagan first-timer Chiwetel Ejiofor has also joined the cast. The question is, will we see the return of Flanagan’s favorite, long-time cast members Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Rahul Kohli, Bruce Greenwood, and Kate Siegel (who is also his wife)?

Upcoming Indie Horror ‘Turn Back’ Is Making Waves On Kickstarter

Their new indie horror film, Turn Back, is coming out of the UK and making waves in the genre before it has even been made, raising nearly $225,000 on Kickstarter in record time. Told in reverse, Turn Back, directed by Riyad Barmania, the film is from Relentless Films and is based on the infamous “Black Shuck” legend, born in the 12th century, from the east of England. The legendary surrounds a tale of a ghostly demonic hound that roamed the Norfolk countryside and became known as an ‘omen of death’ to local residents. If you hear it’s howl, so it was said, whatever you do, close your eyes. This isn’t your standard demon horror film. Like Memento and Irreversible, it will be told in reverse chronological order, with each jump backward in time revealing new information, making for a distinctive take on the horror genre. Director Riyad Barmania says of the crowdfund’s success: “The response is just unbelievable. We’ve set

‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’ Director Adapting ‘Sleepy Hollow’ For New Film

One Halloween classic fans hold dear, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, is getting a new adaptation from Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer, who briefly mentioned the movie during our recent interview. The story, which has been around for generations, was written in 1820, as a short story by Washington Irving. And sees a headless horseman return to life to plague a village. It has been featured multiple times on both the big screen and TV, from silent film to Disney’s animated movie, a series that ran for four seasons on Fox, and then there’s Burton’s 1999 spooky tale starring Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, and Christopher Walken. There is no word yet on who will star in Beer’s film, but after watching Pet Sematary, we have complete confidence in her ability as a filmmaker. Sleepy Hollow is not the only movie Beer is working on, she is also remaking Disney’s Bambi. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, head to

This Stephen King Adaptation Deserves A Reboot Or Remake

We live in a time where everything is being rebooted, remade, or reimagined. Usually, I’m against that kind of thing, but there’s one Steph King project I would actually love to see be redone, the 2002 mini-series “Rose Red.” “Rose Red,” which features three episodes, sees a college professor and a team of psychics investigate an old mansion, hoping to explain some of the mysterious deaths on the property and capture actual paranormal activity. When participants, including psychics, stay in the mansion, a terrifying force threatens to destroy them all. The cast featured some rather large names at the time, including Nancy Travis (So I Married An Ax Murder), Matt Keeslar (Scream 3), Kimberly J. Brown, who you should recognize from the Halloween classic Halloweentown, Julian Sands (Warlock), David Dukes (Gods and Monsters), and Judith Ivey, Melanie Lynskey, Matt Ross, and Kevin Tighe. First, let me say the series was great when it was released. I remember watching it when

Sink Your Fangs Into The Collector’s Edition Of ‘The Last Voyage Of The Demeter’

The Last Voyage of the Demeter sailed into theaters this past summer. You can bring home your copy of the Collector’s Edition, a “must-have” for any collection, now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, and VOD. Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), the film is based on a single chilling chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, and tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. The Last Voyage also stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, and Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway. Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain, and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the ship’s first mate. Javier Botet stars as Dracula. In our spoiler-free review, we called it “nightmare-inducing and brutal.” Unfortunately, the

Spoiler Free Netflix Review: “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”

Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series, “The Fall of the House Of Usher,” has now arrived on Netflix. Is it worth the watch? Damn right, it is. Inspired by multiple tales by Edgar Allen Poe, the series tells the story of a ruthless, corrupt family and that bill from long ago that has come due. The series is dark and brutal and filled with suffering. It unfolds as the head of the Usher family, Rodrick Usher (Brian Greenwood), recounts his rise to power, his loss, and his evil deeds to Auguste Dupin (Auguste Dupin), the attorney who has been on a mission to bring the family down for decades as they sit in the Usher family’s original, now rundown home. Much of the story is told in extended flashbacks, which works beautifully. It was a risky choice that paid off. The main cast includes Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game, “The Haunting of Hill House”), Mary McDonnell (Scream 4), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep),

Short Film Review: ‘Gale Stay Away From Oz’

Right now, on the Chilling App, there’s a film that’s caught the eye of many after its trailer made quite a splash on the internet, a horror retelling of The Wizard of Oz. The short film titled Gale Stay Away From Oz by Daniel Alexander Films directed by Daniel Alexander and Stars Chloë Crump as Emily Gale. In Gale Stay Away From Oz, Emily is plagued by a recurring nightmare. Emily’s trying to make sense of these dreams as she’s grieving the loss of her mother. Emily then discovers she has a grandmother who is a successful author who wrote a book based on her dreams, and her grandmother’s name… Dorothy. The film itself is quite short, around 28 minutes long, so I’m giving some leeway here when it comes to the pacing of the story, stiff acting, and cheap-looking practical effects that kind of ruin the scares. I feel comfortable saying that because here’s the thing. As a storyteller,
