Following a triumphant run across the international festival circuit, The Barn Part III is officially coming to physical media. Independent horror distributor Scream Team Releasing has now launched physical pre-orders on Blu-ray and classic VHS. The final chapter in the indie slasher trilogy wrapped up its theatrical run after high-profile stops at Fright Fest, Popcorn Frights, Panic Fest, Salem Horror Fest, Sitges, and Smodcastle Horror Fest. Along the way, the production also picked up a mountain of awards. It took home Best Feature Film honors at GenreBlast and Requiem Fear Fest. Justin M. Seaman won Best Feature Film. Bringing a multi-limbed, rolling mass of zombified flesh to life required a uniquely artistic approach. Instead of relying on motion-capture suits in front of a green screen, Resident Evil director Zach Cregger and stunt coordinator Jakub Hudlický used real people. They recruited a dedicated ensemble from Czech studio Movement Productions to animate the creatures, including the “Rat King.” The group consisted of highly trained contemporary dancers and contortionists. All with the physical control to move as a singular, undulating organism. To mimic a human “rat king,” the performers were rigged together using custom multi-point harness systems and flexible webbing. Rehearsals focused on disorienting locomotion, training the dancers to crawl, roll, and reach in asymmetric rhythms. So the multi-armed mass moved with an unnatural, jarring cadence. This tactile foundation gave the creature organic weight and a center of gravity during physical set interactions. Digital physics often fails to replicate it.
