Blu-Ray Review: The Pale Door

From director Aaron B. Koontz comes the western horror The Pale Door, an indie film that follows a group of outlaws that discover a woman locked inside a trunk during a trailer robbery. They release her not knowing that she is a witch. When one of the gang is shot they follow her to her town in hopes of finding a doctor and saving their leader, but things don’t go as planned after entering a brothel. Even though the film had a small budget, the cast is surprisingly good, especially Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton, Bill Sage, Pat Healy, Natasha Bassett, and Monster Squad actor Stan Shaw. The cast also includes Melora Walters, Noah Segan, and James Landry Hebert who plays the infamous Cotton Mather. The special effects, which features a ton of gunfire, burn makeup and people crawling on ceilings, were impressive, as was the town that I assume was built just for the movie. The lumber alone would have

31 Days Of Anime Horror Part 5: ‘Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack’

It’s October and that means it’s time to get into the spirit of the season, and obviously nothing gets you into the Halloween mood better than horror. Unfortunately when it comes to most live-action horror films, there’s only so much that can be done and shown, but thankfully of all things, Anime can cross the line with story, gore, and intriguing storytelling. So for every day this month, I’ll be featuring a unique Anime that fits the horror genre that you can most likely find on any streaming service. Things are getting fishy with the OVA Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack. First, what’s an OVA? An OVA is an Anime film or series that’s not broadcast first on TV but instead sent straight to video/DVD and have higher budgets than their broadcast counterparts. Now onto Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack (2012). The film centers around a couple that while on vacation, encounter fish with legs that seem to infect people causing them

Clive Barker Confirms “Nightbreed” Series Has Begun Production

For years there have been rumors of a “Nightbreed” series. Clive Barker himself has now revealed during a chat with Coming Soon that the series adaptation of his book is indeed on the way and that Trick ‘r Treat‘s Michael Dougherty is directing. It’s exciting, after 30 years, to go back to these characters and find out who’s still speaking to me, who wants their story told,” Barker told the site. “My tongue isn’t in my cheek when I say that as when I start a piece. It’s listening. The writing is a piece of listening. I’ve always said I was a journalist and what I was reporting on was the space between my ears.” “Nightbreed” centers on a group of underground dwelling half-human/half-monsters who seek refuge from the human world. A reluctant hero, struggling to cope with his new-found supernatural status attempts to lead the group as they are discovered and attacked by humans. Morga Creek’s James Robinson, David

Movie Review (Twisted Dreams Film Festival): VHS Massacre Too

Whereas the documentary VHS Massacre (2016) took a nostalgic look at the decline of VHS and other physical media, its new sequel VHS Massacre Too focuses on such current issues as the lack of interest and even refusal of large streaming platforms — currently the most popular mode of movie consumption — to feature low-budget exploitation films. The documentary takes a sound look at the problem and how it affects independent filmmakers, cast, and crew members. Director Thomas Edward Seymour kicks the film off with film critic Joe Bob Briggs and others discussing exploitation films, censorship, and related topics from the Hays Code onward. It’s a brief but informative introduction and sets the table well for later censorship discussions, such as Blockbuster Video’s refusal to carry certain types of movies. Briggs is just one of several talking heads in the documentary. He provides fine insight on how films can become obscure and even lost without physical media. Filmmaker and actor

Movie Review (Celebration of Fantastic Fest): The Boy Behind the Door

No exaggeration: The horror thriller The Boy Behind the Door, from the writing and directing team of David Charbonier and Justin Powell, is one of the most tense, gripping films I have seen in ages, and it had me squirming in my seat and shouting advice and encouragement at its young protagonists throughout the film. It’s a sure bet for my list of top 10 horror films of 2020. Bobby (Lonnie Chavis) and Kevin (Ezra Dewey) are best friends, preteen boys who harbor dreams of someday escaping their smalltown existence to go to a sunny place like California together. While tossing a baseball around in the woods, the two are abducted. Bobby escapes from the trunk of the car where he was left to die and starts to run away from the property where they were taken. Then he hears Kevin’s screams and breaks into the kidnapper’s house to try to rescue his friend. That’s all you should know in
