With the release of the southern gothic thriller The Devil to Pay, I sat down with the husband and wife writing, directing, and producing duo Ruckus and Lane Skye to talk about the film and their writing process. The Devil to Pay centers on an Appalachian woman named Lemon (Danielle Deadwyler) who must fight to save herself, her son, and her home after her husband disappears and a powerful family demands her husband’s debt be paid, or else. Horror Fuel: “I love the location you chose for your film. There’s just something about the mountains. And they also seem sort of like a character in the film. It’s great cinematography. How did you go about capturing that?” Ruckus: “We shot in Hiawassee, Georgia, about two hours north of Atlanta. It’s actually a pretty town. We had to erase some houses and powerlines out of the footage. It’s a little movie magic.” Lane:” We had a guy come in and do

Warner Bros. casts a spell with the first trailer for Robert Zemeckis‘ (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Death Becomes Her) new retelling of Roald Dahl’s 1973 classic tale The Witches, starring Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch. Produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro, the film is described as being “visually innovative,” and “tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Jahzir Kadeem Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Octavia Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. The boy and his grandmother come across some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, so Grandma wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort.” “Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.” The Witches will fly right past theaters and will land on

It’s October and that means it’s time to get into the spirit of the season, and obviously nothing gets you into the Halloween mood better than horror. Unfortunately when it comes to most live-action horror films, there’s only so much that can be done and shown, but thankfully of all things, Anime can cross the line with story, gore, and intriguing storytelling. So for every day this month, I’ll be featuring a unique Anime that fits the horror genre that you can most likely find on any streaming service. Let’s keep the blood flowing with HELLSING. HELLSING (2001) is a vampire anime based on the manga of the same name follows the secret organization Hellsing that fights creatures of the night, mainly vampires. The organization has an ace up its sleeve, a powerful vampire within its ranks, Alucard. The story also centers on a young woman named Seras Victoria, a former police officer that was turned into a vampire by

Flying saucers from the planet Paira, which lies on the opposite side of our sun, appear in the skies over Tokyo. The occupants of these craft, a race of human-sized cyclopean starfish, are hellbent on warning mankind about their eminent destruction at the hands of a runaway celestial body, Planet R by name. The big problem with all of this is that humans will doubtless be up to their tits in fear over giant starfish from space and won’t listen to their apocalyptic info, so our friendly buddies from beyond the stars transform one off their own into the likeness of a comely nightclub singer. To that end they attempt to contact a Japanese egghead that’s developed a potent new energy source which they hope to use to construct a big ass bomb that will blow that pesky planet to pieces thus saving Earth and Paira… but before any of that can happen, the scientist is kidnapped by enemy agents

Shudder has now released the horror-comedy Scare Me, the feature debut of writer-director Josh Ruben, to get you in the mood for Halloween. In the film, Fred (Josh Ruben, CollegeHumor), a frustrated copywriter, checks into a winter cabin to start his first novel. While jogging in the nearby woods, he meets Fanny (Aya Cash, “You’re The Worst” “The Boys”), a successful and smug young horror author who fuels his insecurities. During a power outage, Fanny challenges Fred to tell a scary story. As a storm sets in, they pass the time spinning spooky tales fueled by the tensions between them, and Fred is forced to confront his ultimate fear: Fanny is the better storyteller. The stakes are raised when they’re visited by a horror fan (Chris Redd, “Saturday Night Live”) who delivers levity (and a pizza) to the proceedings. “About the pleasures and perils of storytelling and the genre’s power to exorcise social demons, Scare Me is a clever and
