Netflix Movie Review: The Wasteland (AKA El Paramo)

A desolate landscape stretches for miles surrounding a 19th-century home of a poor family, in The Wasteland. A mother (Inma Cuesta) spends her days teaching her son (Asier Flores) how to plant a garden, how to play games, and songs as his emotionally unavailable father (Roberto Alamo) tends to the more gruesome acts of making sure his family is fed with no help because the mother does not want her son’s innocence corrupted. As the three sit by a fire, the father tells his son of a legend, of “the beast” that killed the boy’s aunt. A tall entity with hallow eyes that comes for those that are weak, those who have fear. In other words, it’s his way of telling his son to man up. When the father must leave on a mission, his wife and son are left behind to fend for themselves. Netflix Quietly Releases The Nightmare Inducing Horror ‘The Wasteland’

This week, Netflix quietly released The Wasteland (aka El Paramo, aka The Beast), a new Spanish (English dubbed) horror directed by David Casademunt (Jingle Bells), without any fanfare. After watching the trailer, we can not understand why it didn’t get more promotion. It looks fantastic and creepy as hell. The film centers on a family living in seclusion in the 19th-century who is visited by an evil being that feeds on its victim’s fear. In the nightmare-inducing trailer, a father tells his children the legend of a tall creature with no eyes that preys upon those who are the most vulnerable. Stephanie Bursill and Charleen Williams star alongside Inma Cuesta.

Shudder Review: The Superdeep

Director Arseniy Sukhin (Lockout) takes us deep underground in his sci-fi horror The Superdeep, inspired by a true story and location. The Russian Kola Superdeep Borehole is the largest drilling project in the world, attempting to drill as far as possible into the Earth’s crust. After reaching depths of nearly seven miles below the surface, unexplained sounds resembling the screams and moans were reported and the borehole was shut down. This is where the fiction kicks in. When a small team of scientists and military personnel set out to unearth the source of a terrible illness, they end up discovering the greatest threat that humanity has ever faced. Milena Radulovic (The Balkan Line) stars as Doctor Anya, the scientist who is part of the mission. After a terrible event in the past that forever scarred her, she takes the assignment hoping to redeem herself. Back in 1974, Sally Hardesty earned her place as a final girl after going head-to-head with Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. After a combo of eight sequels, prequels, and reboots, the character is back in David Blue Garcia‘s Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is set to slash its way onto Netflix next month. The first look at the recast Sally, played by Olwen Fouréré, was shared by USA Today. Fouréré took over the role of Sally in the wake of the original actress, Marilyn Burns’ death.
