Annihilation Review: Lovecraft Done Right

There’s a sense of unease all throughout Annihilation, the latest film from Ex Machina director Alex Garland. The strange color palette, booming techno-esque score, and oddly detached performances from the actors add up to a film that is immensely strange, beautiful, and utterly alienating. Few films have really nailed down what made Lovecraft’s monsters so powerful; not just that they were skyscraper sized, tentacled freaks, but that they were completely and utterly inhuman, unimaginable, beyond comprehension. Now since Annihilation is a film, and those generally have to be viewed with your eyes, the spectacle is made a little more sensible. But just a little. Almost every aspect of Garland’s masterpiece remains amazingly alien. The monsters and menaces of Annihilation are a result of a following star, smashing into the Florida Everglades, and infecting the land with an odd rainbow glow. Recalling Lovecraft’s seminal tale, The Colour Out Of Space, The Shimmer, as this forsaken land is coined, warps everything in it’s

New ‘Dark Tower’ Series Finds Its Home

It has been a while since we’ve heard anything about the television adaption of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, until now. In an unrelated article at Deadline the news was buried that Amazon has claimed the series. “As part of the effort, Amazon made a mega deal for a Lord Of the Rings TV series and is developing a slew of high-profile titles, including The Dark Tower, Wheel of Time, Ringworld, Lazarus and Snow Crash,” wrote Deadline, describing Amazon’s current desire to build their library. Last we heard, Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) was in line to be the series’ showrunner, but details have been few and far between. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.

Horror Games That Need A High Definition Remake

Many games in recent times have been given an HD reboot to be compatible with more recent gamming consoles, Resident Evil (Biohazard) has been given a complete makeover with an all new HD game called Resident Evil (Biohazard) HD Remaster that’s available on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One. This would be the game’s second makeover so I thought why stop with this game? There are some horror games in the past that I think are due for an “HD Remaster” makeover too. So here are a few games that I feel deserve a reboot into the HD age in no particular order. Alone in the Dark (PC, 1992) There is a game by the same title that was made in 2008 that’s part of the long game series, I’m talking about the original game that you played on DOS in the 90’s (real 90’s kids know this!) the game is actually considered the first survival horror game to be

Movie Review: Gate II is a Hell of a Good Time!

Since opening a gate to hell with his pal Glen, ol’ Terry (Louis Tripp returning from the first film) has been itchin’ to relive the glory days. To achieve that lofty goal, he has set up some sort of techno-arcane alter in the remains of Glen’s old home. Well as fate would have it (and the fact that it would be one shitty film if he didn’t) Terry successfully performs a ceremony (with an unwanted assist by a trio juvenile delinquents) that conjures forth a minion (also returning from the first film) from The Other Side that grants wishes…now, what could possibly go wrong in this scenario? At first nothing…then everything turns to shit…both figuratively and literally (I mean everything they physically conjure up turns to piles of feces). Will Terry be able to confront the evil of the Gate and save his soul from damnation? Gate II is a rare sequel that is able to be nearly as entertaining

Exorcism Documentary ‘The Devil And Father Amorth’ Coming To Theaters

Few films have been more terrifying than William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. Recently, Friedkin set out to make a document the real rites of exorcism, similar to those we witnessed in his terrifying, ground-breaking, 1973 film. In the documentary, The Devil and Father Amorth, we will witness the real exorcism of an Italian woman performed by Father Gabriel Amorth. Yes, I said real. In the early 1970s when I directed The Exorcist, I had not witnessed an exorcism but I wondered how close I had come to portraying reality,” Friedkin said. “I had been curious to meet Father Amorth for many years and when he granted permission to meet and film him in Rome last May, it was the opportunity to complete the circle and see how close that film came to reality.” Last year during an interview with Variety he said, “I had to shoot it alone, obviously. The conditions were that I come along with no crew and no

‘Death House’ Delayed In Theaters

If you were eagerly awaiting Death House‘s arrival in theaters this week, we have a bit of bad news. You are going to have to wait one more week. The film’s theatrical release will be delayed by 7 days due to the massive success of Black Panther. Eric Parkinson, CEO of Hannover House, who is distributing Death House (review) in theaters, had this to say: Obviously, we are very disappointed to find such pressure from the exhibitors to hold-over multiple screens for ‘Black Panther’ but we are happy for the success that this film is providing to theatre owners, and we know that the slight delay we are implementing for ‘Death House’ will ultimately pay big dividends for the film.” There is good news though, Death House will premiere on Friday, March 2nd and will hold a media event open to the public at the Regency Plant 16 in Van Nuys, California. 20 cast members, along with additional crew members,

Morbid Beauty: Tipu’s Tiger

In the 18th century, England set its sights on colonizing India. India was prosperous in its own ways and would enter the modern age on its own time but England viewed it differently that they were backwater savages that needed to be forced into the present and to grovel thankfully for it. Obviously, this did not sit well with many of the country’s inhabitants leading to deep seeded resentment at the time (and still felt today somewhat). Nothing illustrates this more than the hand-cranked automaton known as Tipu’s Tiger. The machine depicts a tiger on top of a British soldier biting his neck as the soldier lies with a look of horror on his face. That’s not the end of it, the soldier moves; well his arm does in a flailing motion making the hand uncover the mouth where a metal pipe is and allows air to come out making a dull wailing sound as if the man is screaming.

‘Blair Witch’ Conjured For New Series

Lionsgate’s new Studio L is gearing up to make waves in the digital world. Deadline is reporting that the studio announced today that their initial lineup includes three features this Spring and a series based on Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s The Blair Witch Project. The film, which was groundbreaking for the found-footage subgenre, centers on three film students who have traveled to a small backwoods town to film a documentary on the legendary Blair Witch. The film spawned a sequel in 2000 and another from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett in 2016, simply titled Blair Witch. The big questions are, will the series continue the story or take a different path, and will it be found footage?

‘Don’t Leave Home’ Unless It’s To Catch This Film At SXSW

Writer-director Michael Tully’s Don’t Leave Home is set to make its world premiere at this year’s SXSW. Starring Anna Margaret Hollyman, Lalor Roddy, Helena Bereen, David McSavage, and Karrie Cox, the film centers on Melanie Thomas, “an American artist whose latest show recounts the infamous Irish urban legend of Father Alistair Burke, who painted a portrait of 8-year-old Siobhan Callahan in 1986. Days later, Siobhan went missing on the very morning that her figure miraculously vanished from the painting as well. Though absolved of any wrongdoing, Burke abandoned the priesthood and went into self-exile. After receiving a bad review before her opening, Melanie is contacted by the reclusive Burke, who offers to fly her to Ireland to create a new sculpture that he will help her to sell while she’s there. Telling no one where she’s going, Melanie never stops to consider that some urban legends are real.” Screenings: World Premiere: Saturday, March 10th at 1:45 pm (ZACH Theater) Public
