Our Frightening Five: A Quintet of Films We Can’t Wait to See at Fantasia 2026

The 30th edition of Fantasia International Film Festival kicks off later this week, running from July 16–August 2 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The fest is world famous for its annual droolworthy array of genre films from around the world, including horror, science fiction, dark comedies, animation, and beyond. I’ve taken an early deep dive into some of the films slated for this year, and here I present previews of five highly promising feature-length films. The following film descriptions and festival details are from Fantasia’s official website and related press information. Ancestral Beasts Director Tim Riedel’s psychological horror ANCESTRAL BEASTS was a 2025 Frontieres Platform project at Cannes, and it’s coming to Fantasia for its world premiere! Four years after the loss of her mother, Elyse (Morgan Holstrom, OUTLANDER, SHADOW OF THE ROUGAROU) can’t get her head right. She’s messing up at work, needs stress leave, and her sister, Nikki (Darla Contois, LITTLE BIRD, ABERDEEN), is on her case about everything.

A Tradition Takes a Dangerous Turn This July in 'New Year's Absolution'

A Tradition Takes a Dangerous Turn This July in ‘New Year’s Absolution’

If your January goals usually involve hitting the gym or eating more fiber, count yourself lucky. Scatena & Rosner Films has announced the North American release of director Nick Leisure’s chilling new holiday horror thriller, New Year’s Absolution, arriving July 14 on VOD and Digital. Serving up a sinister dose of “Christmas in July” counter-programming, the film poses a terrifying question: What if your New Year’s resolution wasn’t to improve your life—but to end someone else’s? Secret Santa, But Make It Lethal The plot follows a tight-knit group of long-time friends gathering for their annual New Year’s Eve tradition: exchanging anonymous resolutions meant to inspire excitement and positive change. Standard stuff, right? Except this year, someone slips a dark, handwritten curveball into the mix: “Kill Someone.” When the prompt falls into the hands of Jacob, a chronically stressed police officer, he naturally skips “party game paranoia” and goes straight to “this is an active threat on my life.” What follows

An Interview with Writer-Director Natasha Kermani About Her New Film The Dreadful

When it comes to female writers and directors, there just aren’t enough of them. It’s an important point of view and understanding. But there is one we need to talk about, Natasha Kermani. Kermani is a powerful voice. She’s behind the new horror thriller The Dreadful. Spoiler: It’s far from dreadful. Set deep in the heart of medieval England, the story follows Anne (Sophie Turner) and her mother-in-law, Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden). The two live a harsh, isolated life on the fringes of society, just trying to get by. Everything changes when a man from Anne’s past (Kit Harington) returns from the war. His arrival triggers a sinister curse that manifests through a mysterious, terrifying knight. Suddenly, their struggle for survival isn’t just about hunger and cold—it’s about a force that threatens to tear their world apart. The moment I saw the first poster and realized the film sees the reunion of Turner and Harrington, I was in. I am

Director Robert Hollocks Talks ‘The Observance,’ Cults, and Love for the Genre in Our Interview

Once in a while, I come across an indie film that truly impresses me, and I find myself thinking about it and its story long after the credits roll. The cult horror thriller The Observance did just that. Featuring a fresh story, one I haven’t seen before (Thank God), the film follows Madison (Kate Dailey). After a tragic accident, Madison is left in a coma. When she does come back, years will have passed, and her family will have changed more than she could ever have guessed. During her coma, her husband and daughter have been sucked into a violent cult. But Madison isn’t giving up without a fight. As for the film’s cast, Daily is joined by legend Ted Raimi, Alec James, Anna Borchert, Bronson Taylor, Darby Cappillino, Jonathan E. Simmons, and more. The film’s director and co-writer, Rob Hollocks, takes us on a dark journey. I was so impressed by The Observance that I knew I had to

Spoiler-Free Review: SHED (Screamfest 2025)

Spoiler-Free Review: SHED (Screamfest 2025)

Official Synopsis Mia, a courageous 10-year-old girl who is locked in a shed, must survive inconceivable odds whilst trying to discover what happened to her family. Review Writer/director/editor Steven J. Mihaljevich’s Shed (Australia, 2025) is a taut horror thriller boasting a fantastic performance from young Mani Shanks as Mia, a little girl who is locked in the family shed by her little brother during a game. Unbeknownst to her, something awful befalls her family, and after a few days surviving by herself, a maniacal stranger (Jason Robert Lester) discovers her presence. The film starts off as a survival horror in the confinement of the shed before turning into a cat-and-mouse chiller in a wider area. I don’t want to give away too much more than that, as Shed is rich with surprises. Mia is a resourceful youngster who doesn’t give up easily, and her clever ideas for staying alive are more realistic than precocious “superkid”-style elements. Shanks captured Screamfest’s Best

She Will Fear: New ‘Presence’ Trailer Teases a Terrifying Film

From filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, the brilliant mind behind films like Erin Brockovich and Contagion, comes the new chilling horror thriller Presence. The first teaser trailer for this mysterious film was released in August. It gave us a brief glimpse inside a home filled with shadows. Today, the first teaser trailer for Presence has been unveiled. It opens with the line, “In this house she will be loved.” We see a bedroom lit with a string of lights hanging over a bed where a girl sleeps. Next is the line, “In this house she will feel loss.” and finally, “In this house she will fear.” This gives off a seriously ominous and disturbing tone. Written and executive produced by David Koepp, who brought you Jurassic Park, the film follows a family who move into a new, beautiful suburban home and are soon convinced they are not alone as a mysterious entity stalks them. The cast of Presence is filled with talent.

'Hold Your Breath' Trailer Sees Sarah Paulson Haunted by A Killer

‘Hold Your Breath’ Trailer Sees Sarah Paulson Haunted by A Killer

“American Horror Story” star Sarah Paulson is stepping back into the 1930s for the horror thriller Hold Your Breath, set in Oklahoma during the devastating Dust Bowl era. The trailer reveals a chilling, gritty story about a mother’s drive and desperation to protect her children. Paulson plays Margaret, a grieving mother convinced that a sinister presence threatens her family. As she grapples with her loss and tries to protect her daughter, the Dust Bowl’s harsh conditions only intensify the mounting terror. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Annaleigh Ashford, Amiah Miller, and Bill Heck star alongside Paulson. Will Joines and Karrie Crouse (“Westworld”) co-directed and co-wrote the film. Sarah Paulson had this to say to People about the film: “It is really, at its core, an emotional story about a woman who is desperate to keep her children safe,” Paulson, who also executive produces, said. “When you’re talking about a descent into madness, potentially, you always think about control and some of what happens
