Blu-ray Review: Row 19 (2021)

Blu-ray Review: Row 19 (2021)

After surviving a freak plane crash as a child, Katerina (Svetlana Ivanova) has conquered her fears and is set to once again take flight with her young daughter in tow. Sometimes fear can be a life saver… Before the plane even leaves the tarmac, things start getting tense as shit as the weird/stressed passengers (what there are of them) and strange noises begin to take a hold on our heroine, bringing back the trauma… but, she refuses to give in and ditches her meds. I’m sure that’ll only help. Once in the air, a storm starts brewing, and our heroine begins reliving her past as things turn decidedly more nightmarish, not that the unblinking, unmoving flight attendants notice… but an in-flight heart attack seems to snap everybody to, and then all hell breaks loose… but is what is happening merely coincidence and a mental health speed bump, or is something more preternatural afoot? Director Alexander Babaev’s Row 19 is a

DVD Review: Alone With You (2021)

DVD Review: Alone With You (2021)

Charlie (Emily Bennett, who also co-wrote and directed this picture along with Justin Brooks) is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her paramour, photographer Simone (Emma Myles) to their Brooklyn apartment after an extended absence. As she awaits, Charlie wanders the apartment, alone, for extended periods of oddly indeterminable time. As the hands of the clock pass, our heroine passes the time via video messaging with her party hardy friend, as well as arguing with her bible-nut mother (Re-animator and From Beyond‘s Barbara Crampton) over the sinfulness of her lifestyle choices (also on computer screen… it’s apparent from the beginning that this film is both Covid-19 metaphor in some respects, as well as being filmed during the pandemic). Of course, this being a fright flick of sorts, Charlie also begins having blood drenched hallucinations and hearing strange voices and screaming coming from the vents… how does this relate to our protagonists’ mental health, and can she piece together why these events

IFC Midnight's Unsettling Horror 'Hatching' Out Today On Digital And VOD

Movie Reviews: “Hatching” and “Resurrection” (Sundance Film Festival)

Sundance Film Festival is absolutely killing it with its horror selections! Following are capsule reviews of two absolutely bonkers, can’t-miss features. Hatching Finnish/Swedish coproduction Hatching (Ruva, 2022) finds pre-teen gymnast Tinja (Siiri Solalinna in a captivating debut performance) trying to live up to the expectations of her domineering mother (Sophia Heikkilӓ), who vlogs about the wonderful life of their seemingly perfect family. Naturally, the online presence is merely an illusion, as evidenced earlier on when Tinja captures a bird that flew into their house, only to see her mother break its neck. Soon after, Tinja finds a bird’s egg near her home, and promises to take care of what will hatch from it. Big mistake, what with this being a horror film. It would be a shame to go into too many details here about Hanna Bergholm’s astonishing directorial debut Hatching, so suffice it to say that there are some amazing creature and body horror effects on display of both

A24 is known for its unnerving genre films, such as The Lighthouse and Midsommar. Now, their newest excursion into the strange, Lamb, has gotten a surprise VOD release. Lamb, which we call “unsettling” in our review, is from director Valdimar Jóhannsson. The horror thriller “is the story of a childless couple, María (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason), who are sheep farmers in Iceland. On Christmas Eve they find a newborn who is half-human, half sheep. Longing for a child of their own they decide to keep the lamb-child and raise it as their own regardless of the consequences. This unexpected prospect of a new family brings them much joy before it ultimately destroys them.” Watch Lamb now on VOD.

Movie Review: “Motherly”

Movie Review: “Motherly”

Canadian feature Motherly is a slick horror thriller full of intriguing twists and turns. Though savvy viewers may have a strong inclination early on as to the big, climactic reveal, director Craig David Wallace — working from a screenplay that he cowrote with Ian Malone — makes the full ride worth taking nevertheless. Kate (Lora Burke) is trying to give her daughter Beth (Tessa Kozma) a happy ninth birthday party, but Kate isn’t having it. She wants to be with her father, who is in prison for killing a child. The mother and daughter are staying in a safe house located in the woods with her daughter, with law enforcement agent Hal (Colin Paradine) as their contact with the outside world. Kate investigates around the house when she thinks she hears a noise, maybe even seeming a little paranoid, but it turns out someone really is out to get her . . . Let’s leave the plot information at that,
