‘Doctor Sleep’ Is Getting A Spin-Off

While Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep wasn’t a huge smash at the box office, it’s getting nothing but praise. You may be wondering where the franchise will go from here, we can answer that. Warner Bros. has already struck a deal with Flanagan to write a spin-off based on the character of Dick Hallorann, simply titled Hallorann. The chef of the Overlook Hotel was made famous by Scatman Crothers in Stanely Kubrick’s The Shining. The character was most recently played by Carl Lumby in Doctor Sleep. There is no word yet if Lumby will reprise his role in Hallorann or if multiple actors will play the Dick Hallorann. Doctor Sleep is now playing in theaters.

Doctor Sleep Cures Cynema

Reversing Cynema Cynema is not about movie reviews. While I have to tackle some plot points of 2019’s Doctor Sleep, the sequel to 1980’s The Shining, this post is more about the human effort that went into reversing a number of things that left The Shining a sterile and cold film that I always felt was undeserving of the title “terrifying.” You can read my assessment of Cynema in The Shining here: https://horrorfuel.com/2019/04/09/all-work-and-no-play-makes-the-shining-a-dull-film/ Or you can listen to it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-17-friends-dont-let-friends-option-bad-scripts/id1472545207?i=1000453326016 Was Cynema at work with Kubrick’s “masterpiece?” I argued that the answer was “yes.” The original 1980 film was a thin translation of King’s best-selling novel and acted more as a personal indulgence for Kubrick than a functioning horror film. Beautifully made, well done, well produced…it was all those things, but terrifying? No. Dull? Yes. Overrated? Absolutely. Why A Sequel Now? Many forget the overall “Meh” reception of the 1980 The Shining. Critics were mixed to positive and the

“The Haunting Of Bly Manor” Features Several Henry James Tales

Mike Flanagan has been teasing that the second season of his Netflix original series “The Haunting of Bly Manor” will be more frightening than the “The Haunting of Hill House” which was absolutely fantastic. Originally thought to just be an adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” Flanagan revealed to Games Radar that the series will also feature more of James’ tales. The thing I have access to, that no other adaptation of Turn of the Screw has, is the rest of Henry James’ ghost stories. I get to use all of them.” Flanagan continued, “The Turn of the Screw is only one of a dozen stories that we re telling. All Henry James; all thematically linked. I think of Turn of the Screw as the backbone of this season – the through line that carries us from beginning to end. But we get to go off into The Jolly Corner and The Romance of Certain Old Clothes,

Final ‘Doctor Sleep’ Trailer Takes Back To The Overlook Hotel

Ewan McGregor stars as adult Danny Torrance in Mike Flanagan‘s Doctor Sleep, both an adaptation of King’s novel of the same name and the sequel to King’s classic The Shining. Today, the final trailer has arrived for Doctor Sleep and it’s incredible. Flanagan rewrote Akiva Goldsman’sadaptation of King’s 2013 novel which picks up with Danny in his 40s, struggling with the scars of his time at the Overlook Hotel and the same demons of anger and alcoholism that plagued his father. Now, a new generation is in danger. But can he help them? In the film, “On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.” Alex Essoe

The second season of Netflix’s hit anthology series was inspired by Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw which Mike Flanagan intends to put a new spin on. He also promises that this season is going to be even “scarier” than the first. We’re looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal. It’s a cool way to expand on some of the things I loved about season one, but within the framework
